The first track, “Thief in the Night,” is a bright pop-infused tune that comprises soft flutes, plucky synths and a mid-tempo groove that is a bit off-center. Here, Du Malai delivers a bi-lingual performance, seamlessly fusing English and his native Hausa language. Armed with his distinct accented melodies and expressive songwriting, he abstracts the night light concept into a bright and love-laden piece with lines like “I want you in my veins- tonight/I’m thirsty for your touch-your bite.” This is followed by “Feel,” an upbeat trap/pop track underpinned by soft melodic runs and an aspirational theme that tells audiences not ever to dim their light. As the title suggests, it pushes for everyone to truly feel their emotions and not dampen them for anyone. The track’s production is a departure from the previous song and underscores Du Malai’s versatility and range.
“She Divine” is a personification of the moonlight and the somewhat uncontrollable feeling of love in the present. Du Malai once again delivers a fusion of melodies and laidback rapping while switching back and forth between Hausa and English (to a smaller extent). The production here is punchy and crisp and well-suited to the singer’s eclectic musical style. The final track, “Here Comes the Sun” starts with a rich, plucky synth and bright pads underpinned by punchy trap grooves and slick leads that flutter from end to end. Once again, Du Malai employs the celestial body concept by focusing on the sun and its attributes. The track talks about how we all experience rise and fall within love and just like the Sun, we should rise again and live in our light. The track has a bright and hopeful vibe and helps bring the project to a befitting and inspirational note.
Overall, Stories from the Sky sticks to the script, and it’s cohesive from start to finish. The bi-lingual approach is also a focal point and adds authenticity to Du Malai’s creativity and willingness to push his musical boundaries as necessary.
Our favourite track is “Here Comes The Sun.” It’s a brilliant piece that evokes warmth and hope, and we are for it.
