Gainesville, Florida based emcee Casey Jones II doesn’t hold back and dives right into the mix of things with this profound cut titled “Can I Live.”  Backed by a classic sample that exudes nostalgia and calmness, Casey Jones II pricks the mind as he explores the nitty-gritty of systematic oppression in the United States. He looks at the issue from different angles from racism, family problems to economical constructs, all made to place a ceiling on the black folks. Far from beating our heads over with the same thing, he doesn’t try to provide a direct answer but rather leave it to the listener to ponder an all the issues at hand and maybe one day the answers will provide itself.

Can I live? This is a question Black Americans are forced to ask on a daily basis. Amongst life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, life is perhaps the most important and basic human right guaranteed by the U.S. constitution. If we are denied this basic right then the others become void and null. So, let’s start at the basics…Can I Live?

Casey Jones II wrote “Can I Live” about a year ago, and it’s more relevant now than ever.
