Cleveland, Ohio-based rapper Bad Habbits‘ latest release,  Sunfire, is a collection of tracks inspired by the rapper’s trials and tribulations. From battling demons, almost losing his life, to finding his sanity and balance after going through the fire, Bad Habbits crafts the perfect soundtrack to chronicle his life in Miami. The 10-track project proceeds with timestamps that capture different events and the emotions he was feeling at the time.

The first track, “Sunfire,” starts with an atmospheric and experimental aesthetic underpinned by raw, unfiltered raps that detail the struggles and the inner battle of finding what true peace feels like. This is followed by “Heal In Time,” a dark, moody track that explores the difficult phase of self-healing. Armed with his laidback flow and lines like “I wanna put my faith in all creation/Escape the fall of civilization/Sometimes ????  is a matter of placement/Scared of the way, it’s breaking your faces,” which underscore his path towards healing. “Testaments” is the next track and is packed with social-political commentary that alludes to social engineering and the need for the masses to wake up from the veil thrown over our eyes. The social-political theme continues on “Clash Of The Titans” where he looks at the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian war, the US’s underhanded political schemes, but most importantly, the women and children whose lives have been decimated. “Gravity Wave Amplifier” is an off-kilter experimental track comprising plucky synths, distorted leads and ominous pads with psychedelic sound design all underpinned by unfiltered bars about modern technology and the dark side we often try to ignore.
For the most part, SunFire strays from the norm and the expected with its nonconformist soundscapes and musical styles and themes. On “Overcome,” Bad Habbits embodies the mindset of a winner who has gone through tough times. Branded in fire, he shows us how resilience and a will of steel pulled him through it all. Other notable tracks include the guitar-driven “Keep Running Astray,”  “The Compromise,” and  “Phoenix Rising.” These tracks explore a wide range of topics, from tough life decisions, to mental clarity to finding one’s true purpose and rising above the craziness like the proverbial Phoenix. The final track, “Society,” is a nostalgia-inducing cut that is built on a solemn boombap backdrop and sees the rapper sharing his thoughts on modern society and how we can break free from the constraints by following our guts.
Sunfire is a dense project with a lot for listeners to unpack, so we implore you to start early.
