Rising Toronto-based rapper/songwriter Aminata caught our ears with her stunning new single titled “What’s Magic?”. The track is a mellow and introspective tune that showcases Aminata’s laidback flow, vivid lyrics that are steeped in pure visual poetry that takes listeners deep into her world. Over the moody and somewhat offbeat soundscape made up of nostalgia-inducing pads, slightly distorted synths and a thick boom-bap drum groove, Aminata delivers a flurry of bars filled with insight, bravado and gems to grow on. Lines like “My delivery atypical, the bars quite Biblical/Fibonacci with the flow, that’s to say 5 syllables/My karma has residuals, my speech quite lyrical/I just call it living but you may call it spiritual” show how profound she can get with the rhyme schemes and still maintain a cohesive train of thought that listeners can follow from start to finish.
Overall, “What’s Magic?” is purely black girl magic on wax.
