Nigerian music producer turn singer/songwriter Young Jonn unveils his sophomore album, Blue Disco. This body of work is a 21-track project that serves as the follow up to his debut LP Jiggy Forever. While the transition from music producer and singer is commonplace, with artists looking to diversify their portfolio and expand their skillset in an ever evolving and fickle industry, the trick is to raise and maintain one’s momentum. Young Jonn can be said to have found a balance, a schtick, if you will. Moving from making hits for afrobeats luminaries such as Olamide, and Naira Marley, to finding a voice within an already saturated field, the singer quickly sets his sights on his goals and stays on his lane.

The project kicks off with the aspirational/celebratory track “Padre Nuestro” where he calmly sings “I no dey do competition with another man/ owo ye mo wa, my brother man/If you’re not making money, you’re in palaver” quickly addressing any misconceptions about his mission statement. This is followed up by a pair of bangers, the love themed  “Lalala” and  the sultry guitar-driven hustle anthem “Level Up” featuring Rema and Olamide respectively. The production on the album continues to shine and while the foundation remians Afrobeats, the infusion of modern disco/electronic elements with dancehall-isnpired cadences and pop aesthetics. Young Jonn aims to break any form of perceived monotony. From the synth-flavoured “Jiggy Bop” to solemn and reflective “Close Friends List” to the hypnotic amapiano-cut “2Factor” featuring Asake and South African artist Focalistic, Young Jonn runs through topics ranging from having fun, living life to being weary of fairweather friends and keeping his circle close. He ensures to stand on his talent and delivers the goods with his expressive vocal style that shines on tracks like the affirmative “LAPO Baby” where he reminds everyone of his humble beginnings, or the modern pop infused  “Minivan” with its summery vibes and uplifting message. He doesn’t attempt to belt out extraneous melodic runs but rather he keeps it simple on the mid-range level and extensive use of catchy vocal riffs and Tri-lingual songwriting where he effortlessly merges English, Nigerian pidgin English and Yoruba.

I must add that at 21 tracks, the project is an ambitious one and specifically made for hard core Young Jonn fans, plus leading with the Wizkid assisted single “Cash Flow” help make the anticipations high. The highly successful collaboration is about having a winning mindset and super human work ethic. As usual, Young Jonn’s vocals flows like honey and milk combination while Wizkid’s distinct voclas cut through the mix and cements the duo’s successes as pioneers in the Afrobeats genre. The project sure has a lot of gems and deep cuts that might go unnoticed, such as the hypnotic “Che Che” with Asake (these two sure make a solid musical pair)  and also, the rousing “Away” with it’s anti negative energy theme is refreshing while “Obi’s House” is a subtle nod to the successful event run in Lagos by Guiness world record breaking DJ Obi. Overall, Blue Disco is a display of musical range and willingness to expand beyond the norm. Young Jonn continues the push his musical ceiling and we can only imagine what next he will bring to the forefront.
