The Winston Brothers, made up of multi-instrumentalist and producer Sebastian Nagel and drummer Lucas Kochbeck, have teamed up with Max Weissenfeldt on drums and Carsten Meyer (Erobique), saxophonist and flautist Kimo Eiserbeck and trumpeter Hans Stephan for their forthcoming sophomore album, Sweets. In the interim, they share with fans their lead single “Get On Down,” a rousing funk/soul piece that taps into the spirit of the late James Brown, Isaac Hayes, etc with the pizazz of Hamburg’s contemporary soul and funk underground styles.
The track is as boisterous as the title suggests and demands listeners to get up and get down. Starting with a hard-hitting drum groove that evokes urgency and immediate attention, the band builds to a triumphant horn section and electrifying guitar riffs layered with cinematic pads and soft tones to complete the job.
That communal spirit is central to The Winston Brothers’ identity. With connections stretching across acts including Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Angels of Libra and the Mighty Mocambos, the duo are part of a generation of Hamburg musicians carrying the language of vintage funk and soul into new territory.
