Eyedea (November 9, 1981 – October 17, 2010)

Tragic news struck the hip hop community yesterday when Kathy Averil mother of Michael “Eyedea” Larsen announce that her son  had died of unknown reasons at the young age of 28.

Eyedea was most notable for winning several freestyle competitions, including televised Blaze Battle sponsored by HBO and a victory at Scribble Jam

Larsen and childhood friend Max Keltgen recorded three albums as Eyedea and Abilities on Minneapolis hip hop group Atmosphere’s label, Rhymesayers Entertainment. Eyedea and Abilities performed with the group in the late 1990s.

Kathy Averill:

“It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away,”

“At this time, we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss.”

Kathy did add that she welcomes “kinds words, memories, and positive thoughts” via page on Facebook she set up as a memorial fundraiser for donations toward the cost of his services.

To visit the fundraiser page, head to Facebook.com, where a Paypal link is posted to allow for online donations.
