Lupe Fiasco is not one to be afraid of controversy, but there becomes a point where you become a parody of yourself. While performing on stage during an Obama inauguration celebration at Hamilton Live his ‘set was ended early’ after a rant at the President, which followed a half an hour set of Lupe rapping the first verse of the track Words I Never Said from his album Lasers on repeat. Lupend reports the MC rapped the verse to the instrumentals of all the tracks he planned to do, before his mic was cut off after twenty minutes, after which he still carried on for another five to ten minutes before security eventually came to remove him from the stage.

So what do you make of this? Is Lupe taking himself too seriously and as a consequence is being taken for a fool, or is this a bold statement against an administration he fervently disagrees with and should be commended as such? It is a tricky one, and while I personally am always on Lupe’s side, I think there’s a time and a place to make an effective statement – and I’m not sure this was it. The intent is appreciated, but you have to wonder about how much effective it actually is. But hey, if you feel different drop a comment.
