Word Is Bond would like to express our regret at learning that Chris Lighty, founder of the Violator management group, has died this morning at the age of 44. Responsible for managing and promoting the likes of Busta Rhymes, Nas, LL Cool J, Q Tip and Mobb Deep among many, many others, he retains an intimate link with the history of Hip Hop, manifesting itself in the floods of tributes from artists and peers in the music world.

Nothing has been confirmed about the circumstances of Lighty’s death but the New York Daily News reports that he shot himself after an argument with his ex-wife in his Bronx home, amid personal and financial problems.

The thoughts of Word Is Bond’s contributors and it’s readers are with Lighty’s friends and family.
