New York-based retro soul/funk band Ghost Funk Orchestra deliver their newest single “Yours.” The track is the band’s first studio recording featuring seasoned vocalist Camellia Hartman, and it serves as a precursor to their forthcoming studio album to be released on Colemine Records.

“You” feels like a time capsule and a link to the past as the band’s musical and recording approach leans towards the traditional way. They cut out the fat and avoid the extra clean sheen of the digital era, and the result is a brilliant track that highlights both instrumentation and vocals. Fusing North Soul, a dash of funk and contemporary bluesy R&B, listeners get lost in the layered textures featuring horn sections, soft, moody organs, and rousing drum grooves. On the vocal side, Hartman’s soul-stirring performance raises the ante as she delivers an emotionally powerful rendition of the Motown-era singers that came before her, but as expected, with her unique spin.

Ghost Funk Orchestra is the brainchild of composer, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and producer Seth Applebaum. Beginning around 2014 as a one-man recording project in New York, GFO has since evolved into a large live ensemble, developing a distinctive sound that draws from soul, funk, psychedelia, jazz, Latin music, exotica, surf and vintage film scores.
