FORUM: Define Hip-Hop

A couple of months back Jeremy provoked an interesting question, what tunes are real hip-hop? And the responses were fairly diverse; we got classic instrumentals, a variety of underground hip-hop from Binary Star to Cunninlynguists, battle rhymes, old school, nu school. But what about stuff like Daedelus and Flying Lotus? Is there anything in the mainstream nowadays that people would define as ‘real’ Hip-Hop? Maybe Tyler the Creator is right and we’re all too narrow minded!

So, what do you think, what song defines real hip-hop? Go ahead and share it on the forums…

  1. I truly believe we all have one thing in common, and that is programming. We have the ability to change the music whenever we want, but some of us dont really have a mind of our own and go with the results by what they see, rather than digging up good music and occupy their time to control their needs, but the others(that poses the media leadership)that dwell in everyones drama/rich filled life find it easier to just point and shoot and put it on air, making it the “next big thing” available for the eye to take roll in what is called “the way it is now a days” , so much easier to do and its sad but true. This can all be shut down if we took the time to look elsewhere rather than letting everything pop up in our face. Lupe fiascos interview @105.1 breakfast club he was talking about a certain individuals grind, and how he captivated the moment of the crowd, building that rep. his name Black Milk, he made me look this dude up…and frankly words were ok …but the thing was his presence and the way he delivered and atmoshpere almost made it seem as if this was a classic, beginning to wonder if his beats are even his…THAT is a case of programming…bieng lead by ones opinion you hold responsible to your self because you believe that his voice matters to you..so all in all, i think we should let ourselves leave this plastic filled world behind …truly look deep in ourselves and say …WHAT IS MUSIC IN GENERAL!!!!!!!!!!!!
