Emerging singer/songwriter Emanuel pens a heartfelt ode to the “Black Woman” and explores the strengths and struggles they go through on a daily basis. Bolstered by a smooth guitar riff with no percussions, Emanuel delivers a gripping emotional driven performance laced with insightful and adulation filled lyrics like ” She is a Goddess walking on Earth, baby/Superwoman power comes from the sun/ Lovely woman, my only one”

Emanuel’s inspiration for ‘Black Woman’ opens the video as we hear Nikki Giovanni’s striking words from almost 50 years ago during her 1971 conversation with fellow author, poet, and activist James Baldwin.

The visuals were directed by Jamar Harding (Tinashé, Jay Sean), and shot in the city of LA. Harding goes for an eclectic, all-natural aesthetic with the way he captures the aura of various black women in their element. Stripped of the glitz and razzmatazz, the video fully conceptualizes the song’s message of recognizing and honoring Black women.

Alongside the single’s release on October 9, Emanuel launched the “Black Woman” portrait series, creatively directed by Ashley McKenzie-Barnes, that put five influential Black women from Toronto’s artistic and advocacy communities in the spotlight. The I AM BLACK WOMXN portrait series towered over Toronto’s Yonge & Dundas Square for the full first week of release on a bespoke Spotify billboard, the first-ever of its kind.
