Emerging Detroit rapper/producer Drew Skeyewalker has been on our radar for a minute with his refreshing take on soulful hiphop with relatable raps and classy aesthetics. Now he closes out the year with his new album- SOLOMON, a 10-track that details his experiences and growth as a black man and an artist. From the ups and downs of the never-ending struggles to the different characters that colour his journey,  Drew Skeyewalker gives audiences an authentic and unapologetic glimpse into his development.

The first song “Free Breakfast” help set the tone with it’s warm guitar and vocal samples. Inspired by the free breakfast scheme initiated by the Black Panther Party and their numerous community services, Drew Skeyewalker embodies the go-getter spirit that sprung from the movement and reimagines it from his perspective. The production is warm and has a distinct recurring drum groove that is not entirely overwhelming but helps add a distinct oomph to Skeyewalker’s expressive cadence. Lines like Like Fredro Starr, Sunset Park vibes/ I don’t fuck with many niggaz, only my tribe/Intelligence is complex, wisdom is simple/ ??? nigga still throwing up symptoms/Black as they come/Brown sugar and sauce/When that bag is thrown at me, I’mma catch it like Moss” stands out for us and helps underscore his motivations. The following track “Monitoring Spirits” continues in the same soulful terrain. The warm textures, soft keys and punchy drums form the perfect backdrop for Skeyewalker’s lucid story telling. He takes us deep into his world and the different events that for better or worse changed his life. “Shaky hands” comprises a rich soulful vocal sample with hushed drums underpinned by Skeyewalker’s engaging lyricism like It’s hard to get a buzz when you ain’t pushing black ignorance/free breakfast for the youth made the panthers a threat/I be giving niggaz game, I feel like I could be next/Shit I seen when niggaz hate, I’m more surprised when there’s love/Breathing exercises, I’m inhaling the drugs.” “Airsmith (Interlude)” is a short track that dives into connection, communication and the essence of love between two individuals. Here, Skeyewalker pours adulations on that special someone and details their growth and the different memories they created and shared.

The project sticks to familiar themes with a focus on soulful backdrops and rich storytelling. Skeyewalker reflects on his hustle and how he weaves through the hate on “Expensive Scents” while on “Japanese Luxury” he flexes his playboy attributes with raw charisma and bravado lines like “Slick tongue, mack a bitch/You gonna think it’s voodoo/I like that with the brown skin, similar to ???/Watch me milk the game/You already know my name/Look up to see me in rare form .” Other tracks like the cinematic “Blackjack” and the summer-drenched“Veterans Day” featuring 97Shadd show different sides to his artistry. Skeyewalker traverses different terrains as a man on his mission on the former while getting rid of unnecessary baggage on the latter.

The project comes to a close with the dark soul-trap “Habibi” and  soulful “Blue Lobster.” The former follows Skeyewalker through exotic locations and the exquisite lifestyle that comes with his expensive taste.“Blue Lobster” feels like the end of a movie and audiences get to see Skeyewalker in his element and basking in his success. Armed with his laidback commanding flow and rhymes like Fresh as hell, I forget to pop the tag sometimes/You ain’t gotta worry ‘bout me/my nigga I’m fine/Ask the hoes that chose me, they will say the same thing/Got every limb on my body still gangrene,  Skeyewalker brings a distinct authenticity to the forefront and closes out the project on a majestic note.

Overall SOLOMON is a cohesive, lyric-driven project that is filled with smooth soul-stirring beats and no-holds-barred rhymes. In other words, it sticks to the script and delivers exactly as promised.
