Amsterdam-based pianist/music producer Colombo first popped on our radar a while back with his experimental boom-bap-inspired productions. His latest release is two tracks “Bap Reverence” and “Slam Conductor” which are examples of his musical exploration and love for pushing the boundaries.
The first track “Bap Reverence” is a mellow piece that evokes nostalgia and reflective vibes. Colombo employs a dreamy and sublime motif as the main instrument and peppers it with punchy drum breaks, moody but layered textures and vocal scratches to create a groovy ambiance for listeners.
The second track “Slam Conductor” reminds me of classic R&B/soul tracks from the early 2000s. Here, Colombo goes into his bag to craft a progressive piano-driven piece laced with pulsating basslines, plucky organs and soothing pads bolstered by head-nodding drum grooves.
