Emerging San Diego -based rapper Benny Canales and hardworking US-born, London-Based producer Big O team up for a collaborative EP entitled Blindfolded. The 10-track project is a perfect marriage of dope beats, dope rhymes threaded by self-reflection, the power of nostalgia and discovery as life unfolds in the natural way.

The EP starts on a high note with the celebratory track “Good Times,” which highlights Benny Canales’ expressive lyrical style and storytelling. He doesn’t shy away from keeping things candid while flexing his verbal biceps now and then. The production has a soulful and uplifting vibe, which is perfect for bars like
” I wake up and hug my seeds and thank G-O-D for letting me breathe and letting me stay another day/I’m crushing my way, catastrophic thoughts destroying the beat when my vocals drop.” As the title suggests, it’s an invitation into the world built by Canales and Big O. This is followed by “Day Room,” a reflective piece about inner peace and the never-ending stress life presents. The soundscape has an atmospheric and warm vibe that exudes blissful moments. Here, Canales runs through his life experiences, questions what the endgame of it all is and finally decides to roll with the punches and live in the moment.
“Lonely”  brings in Tranzformer and Johnny August to join the fray as each artist shares their creative journey and the process of growth. Lines like “Everybody ditching, menace II society but we not switching, it’s just a part of life/And then my big brother introduced me to a mic/Slowly I became nice, and when it came to the school I was always getting kicked out” dive into the parallels of creative skill and academia and choices made to fulfil one’s true purpose. The chorus is bolstered by an off-beat melodic hook that talks about mental struggles and the arduous process of pushing through. This is followed by “Heat is On,” a track that evokes nostalgia and is punctuated by thick jazzy bass lines and horns with punchy drums. Here, Canales stands on business against the detractors and naysayers who try to throw him off balance.  He also leads listeners deep into his stomping grounds with  lines like
“Never for a moment, let it pass you by/Take advantage of the motion/ Be the leader with the heater, never be the chosen/No joke, we stay golden/ We from the golden state, with the wrong colours and baseball cap is holding hate“
which cements his storytelling proficiency.
The final track “No Chains” is a hard-hitting jam reminiscent of 90s records by Preemo and Pete Rock with a modern twist. As the title suggests, it finds Canales taking off the reins, and he flows with such passion and composure. In the same vein, he pays homage to the pioneers before him and shows that he will continue to hold down the fort and represent till the final end.
The rest of the project is filled with instrumentals of the previous tracks, and it’s a great addition because Big O’s production is a huge part of what makes the project solid. Mixing classic boom-bap rhythms, soulful elements with dusty jazz tones and dynamic sound design, Big O’s soundscape deserves to shine.
