For those of you who are into graffiti art, you know that Style Wars is THE documentary that cemented (and catapulted simultaneously) the lifeline of the artform into the limelight. This doc, according to co-director Henry Chalfant, was supposed to be ‘a big drama about New York at the time’, and the probability of graffiti being accepted by society eventually was ‘serendipitous’.

It has been thirty years since the release of the famous doc on television (before it hit theaters a year later), and now as part of their Summer Nights series, independent radio station KCRW will be hosting this event by showing the documentary and having a panel discussion with Henry and actress Catherine Keener (who played a huge role in getting the negatives of the film restored to life and converted to HD for preservation through a fundraiser in NY a couple of years ago)! Also, LA legend graffiti artists Mear One, RISK, and emerging artist DCYPHER will be doing live art as well as the t-shirt screeners Hit+Run crew will be making some fresh tees as well. Guest DJ will be KCRW’s own Anthony Valadez who will be playing the sickest tunes that inspired the film, with some bboys who will be performing for the crowd!

The event will be taking place at Oscars Outdoors in Hollywood, starting at 630pm. It is STRONGLY advised to arrive early since the event is FREE. The RSVP is closed, so there will be a stand-by line which will be letting people in at 6pm. There will be food available there, so all you need to bring is something cozy to sit on the lawn with (like lawn chairs, beach chairs, etc), and some beverages (beer is okay to bring; just not the hard liquor)!
