Eclectic rapper/songwriter UraelB returns with a brand new EP entitled NOSTALGIA (EP). The project is a reflective and somewhat semi-autobiographic account of his experiences growing up in South Central LA. The project starts at the beginning of the rapper’s life in his early childhood, teenage years to adulthood and threads different scenarios that show his life’s progression.
“SmartGuy (Episode 1)” is a vivid tale that centers around preconceived notions and his experience as an outlier in certain environments. Over a bouncy bass-heavy soundscape that evokes that classic Westcoast vibe, UraelB leads us into his world with engaging lines like “I heard the scariest niggaz are usually the most audible/I find it comical that come niggaz would try to mark me out/‘Cause my grammar was clean, vocab was deep and the book I had came from money I saved for weeks.” This leads into the semi-autobiographical “Dirty Toothbrush (Episode 2).” This record comprises jazz horns, and warm pads with a smooth groove underpinned by UraelB’s expressive flow and knack for painting vivid images about life. Once again, he takes us on an emotional ride anchored on self-discovery, and personal growth. The next track “Mo To the…(Episode 3)” is a short interlude featuring a female character who shows disdain for UraelB and says some negative things about the rapper. This however serves as the lead into the final track “Aim 2 KiK it (Episode 4).” The track employs the same sample from Dr. Dre’s “Let Me Ride” and dives into the matters of the heart and sees UraelB’s continuous search in finding that special one who is ready to go the distance with him.
In summary, UraelB’s pen game is undeniable, and his approach to songwriting and music concepts is refreshing. While NOSTALGIA (EP) covers some topical issues, the project also gives audiences a snapshot of the rapper’s life and in a way leaves things open-ended so there is more to expect from the emerging rapper. Overall production is crisp, bouncy and cinematic too. The 4 track project serves as the first of upcoming projects from UraelB who is also working on his Respect The Real Vol. II.
