producer/composer Slowe (AKA Sophie Hawes) first caught our ears with her single “Fix Me Up” some months ago and now she returns with a new one titled “Calibrate”.  The jazz-infused soul record sees Slowe collaborating with a duo of instrumentalists ranging from Guitarist Eli Jitsuto (from Snazzback) who peppers the track with a sublime guitar arrangement while Samuel Fox layers it with some groovy pulsating bass lines.  The result is an atmospheric jazzy piece that is dreamy, nostalgic and warm all at once. “Calibrate” explores the dynamics of self-growth and the fear of going back while trying to achieve crystal clear clarity. As the title suggests, it’s all about finding the right frequency to tap into and calibrate oneself back to the right state.

The record is quite expansive as it progresses, listeners would be thrilled by the ethereal psychedelic arrangement which colours it with an undeniable emotional oomph. This is something you must not miss so just ensure you listen to the end.

Raised in the Welsh border town of Chepstow, Slowe has been writing music and performing in bands since her teens. During a gigging hiatus, she found herself gravitating towards self-sufficient production, turning her hand to an array of instruments – including flute, keys and guitar – to recreate the styles of her favourite producers utilising her musical talent, passion and creative understanding. 

Slowe’s DIY approach is reminiscent of lo-fi beat-making; delicately layering together session recordings, and repurposing techniques akin to those of J Dilla and Madlib. The result is both nostalgic and fiercely contemporary, with sparkling Rhodes, vintage drum lines, and buttery vocals. The combination of Slowe’s radiant lilts and introspective lyricism atop the fuzzy, analogue warmth makes for swooning escapism.
