Austin, TX-based rapper Pat G presents to us his new effort entitled Talk to me nice EP, the 5-track project that aims to showcase the rapper’s lyricism to the world. The theme of the project is about raising the bar, figuratively and being comfortable within his skin without sugarcoating for anyone.
Pat G goes to bat on the first track “Let’s Go” where he lets off a verbal onslaught on unsuspecting foes and detractors. He employs a moody and somewhat cinematic trap soundscape to deliver his message. He acknowledges the slow grind, failures and mistakes but with resilience and fortitude he remains on the scene as he sends a reminder with lines like “Please check your tone when you talking to me/ I look young but I’m grown I ain’t the 1, 2 or 3/ No need to sugarcoat that, nah ain’t nothing sweet, I am not even in my prime, I’m not even close to my peak”. This is followed by “Down” featuring Wild Prxfits which continues Pat G’s story as he takes us deep into his world and the many experiences that shaped him as a young man. The production here has a Gospel/Bluesy feel with brooding textures and a punchy drum groove to match Pat G’s and Wild Prxfits’ unapologetic and heartfelt raps.
The following tracks “Spectrum” and ”Nobody” give audiences different sides to Pat G’s artistry and versatility. The former is a reflective piece that uses an ominous and brooding backdrop as its canvass for Pat G’s commanding vocals and graphic imagery. He is joined by singer Saridae who peppers the track with her sultry and magnetic vocal runs. On ”Nobody”, Pat G gets into the zone with a variety of schemes, inner rhymes and wordplay with bars like “I’m on my Dylan, I have been dialled in/call any play you want, I find a way to win/and through it all I find my way in/Now I tip the scales every time I weigh in” setting the tone for the rest of the lyric dense track. The project comes to a close with the final track “Honest Conversation” which lives up to its name. It starts with a solemn filtered string sample and pulsating bass-driven rhythm and sees Pat G detailing his next steps and how far his work ethic has brought him. He sounds confident and relaxed on this tune as he has nothing to hide and gives listeners his all.
Talk to Me Nice EP as a project is a snapshot of Pat G as an artist and gives a glimpse into his life with a focus on his lyrical skills. It’s not supposed to break new ground but rather stands as a testament to his rising star.
