London-based, genre-blending artist mase J caught our ears with his new single “boy with no reflection.” The reflective tune sees him detailing his upbringing in an environment without a positive role model and the journey to unlearning negative habits into adulthood. Backed by a soulful and solemn soundscape comprising moody strings, warm pads and mellow drums, mase J delivers a heartfelt performance with poignant bars like
“Trust me bro, not a good look, all that portrayed,
& don’t want none of that, please just bring my lover back
Evening, when she calls my phone like,
Nigga don’t deceive me, what do you believe in?
All that shit you say in songs, that shit doesn’t leave me”
The track is a perfect introduction to him as an artist and adds a layer to his versatility as a songwriter.
