Emerging Philly-based rapper Kohn caught our ears with his debut LP The Space Between. The 10 track body of work explores Kohn’s growth as a young man and artist and the several challenges that pushed him along the way.

The project starts with a bang with the first song “I Am” featuring Big Bro. The hi-octane track showcases Kohn’s triple cadence and bravado raps in their purest form. As the title suggests, it’s a declaration of his willpower and resilience as a man on his square. Kohn singlehandedly raised the bar on this one but the lines that caught me are as follows “We just got started, There is no need to summarize/but I also don’t want you to have to wonder why we are unbeatable, comparatively speaking to the other guys/step back, analyze/Paint a picture to the world like Vandalize/My life is a movie and all of these haters ain’t getting no camera time.” This is followed by “Clarity,” a dark trap tune comprising thick 808 drums, and cinematic textures and underpinned by Kohn’s fast-paced flow and heartfelt lyrics. Here, he runs through the experiences that shaped him as he journeys toward inner clarity. Kohn continues on the energetic plane with another hard-hitting cut “Rapsodic.” The track is filled with edgy and expressive flows and a catchy hook to match.

“Overboard” is another collaboration with Big Bro and together they deliver a relatable and heartfelt track about rocky relationships and the sinking feeling of losing that special someone. Over the Solmen dark piano-driven trap soundscape, Kohn takes us through the ups and downs of his love life and the emotional trauma he is trying to tame. “Savage Mode” is an aptly titled track that showcases Kohn’s rapping ability once more and he goes for the jugular with off-kilter bars delivered with a triple cadence style. Nothing is left to chance on tracks like the hard-hitting go-getter anthem “Striving,” and the reflective “Infinite” or the boastful “New Direction” where he proclaims taking rap into a new plateau with his refreshing style. The last two tracks “Greater Force” and “The Space Between” are as distinct as they come and give audiences two sides to Kohn’s artistry. The former has a soulful vibe with edgy downtempo drums and is ripe with uplifting and motivational themes while the latter help bring the project to a close with a glimpse into Kohn’s background. He shows us the progression he attained and the hurdles he had to overcome to reach this point.

Overall The Space Between, serves as a showcase of sorts for Kohn as a rapper/songwriter. I must add, his lyrics are well-crafted and thoughtful and he knows how to infuse catchy hooks into his repertoire. This is an added plus that help embellish the hard-hitting songs and brings variety to his artistry.
