The title track, “legman,” is a smooth R&B/hiphop-infused cut that highlights JusLegacy’s versatility as an artist. Over a silky textured backdorp, he blends easy-going melodies with his laidback raps underpinned by reflective thoughts. Here, he lets loose and shares his vulnerabilities on wax. The next track, “Doom Scroll” revolves around emotion dampening by the use of distraction. The production is bouncy and crisp, and is reminiscent of Kaytranada’s electronic/dance-infused R&B compositions. Here, JusLegacy gives audiences a masterclass in emotive writing bolstered by a relatable theme. He adopts a mellow melodic style that is easy to follow and delivers a smooth lounge banger with insightful lyrics.
“Running from my feels,/ running from the pressure/ Running from my brain, scrolling past reflection/dejection, perception.”
“world gone mad” is a solemn piece that explores cloudy days where everything is gloomy. The lyrics are a mix of reflective thoughts, acceptance and a dash of positive affirmation. The production has an ethereal and atmospheric feel, while the flow is versatile enough to make the gloomy subject matter palatable for the audience to fully digest. At the end of the day, even though everything has gone bad, Juslegacy is not giving up anytime soon.
“No disrespect, how many times a rapper has told me, you make me go win/I bring the conscious society need it, I question the masses that most recommend/I bring the concepts toeing the line, a modern day prophet..”
“Flowers” is Juslegacy’s legacy track that sees him questioning several things, ranging from celebrity worship, social constructs, cultures and on the flipside, he looks at the power of autonomy and freethinking. The aptly titled “last lap” is the closer, and it fits the bill with a nostalgic vibe. From the shimmering keys and soulful backdrop to JusLegacy’s heartfelt love letter to life’s struggles. The emcee drops a single but powerful verse that evokes bittersweet memories and a touching farewell to the listener.
Overall, LEGMAN is quite a brief body of work, and it will be remiss of me to judge his full artistic potential on such a short project. JusLegacy doesn’t shy away from showing his feelings, vulnerabilities or being sentimental, and that is what makes him shine. As a rapper, he gets the job done, even as serviceable as it might seem for some, and his singing approach is brilliant as well. His ear for beats is commendable as he picks the perfect backdrops for each theme and the final product is well-polished and fleshed out.
