Chi-town rapper J-Merk shares his new project Tr@p ¢in€mä, a 7-track body of work that highlights his off-kilter lyrical style and storytelling over dark trap backdrops. The project finds him teaming up with Finnish producer BETT1, who produces the entirety of the project. The two met online via BandLab’s sprawling online community platform and formed a creative relationship spanning two continents.

“Dr. J” is built on a dark and brooding soundscape akin to a retro horror flick, and it is underpinned by J-Merk’s animated flow and graphic lyrics containing violence, sexual adventures and gore. He delivers a variety of flows ranging from energetic to laidback and ties it with a refrain that goes “What goes around, comes around, yeah you got it coming, I’ll kick a door and lay it down, yeah, I’ll take my money!” before lunging into a diatribe that is a bit too graphic to write down. It sure plays into the album title and feels like the opening scene of a film. The next track, “Blue Dolphin,” continues with the dark theme. The synth-driven track has brooding textures, eerie gongs and flurry glitchy synth leads punctuated by hard-hitting 808s. Here, J-Merk flexes on the opposition while revelling in his prowess with the ladies, using no-holds-barred and unfiltered lyricism to convey the message across. This is followed by “Beam Me Up!,” and it also lies in the same vein as the previous cuts. However, he wears the mantle of the alien and uses sci-fi references as his lyrical device. He even tuned his vocals to sound a bit otherworldly and quirky. The lyrics are quite hilarious and vivid, while bars like “pull up in that spaceship, beam me up Scotty, ain’t got time for games, but I’ll play Monopoly, we can go to war like Thermopylae, yeah I’m an alien, a fucking Chi-tillian, coming out my body, yeah it’s getting real again won’t fold like origami.” show how off-kilter he can be. On “xFile,” J-Merk goes reflective and shares an enthralling tale filled with colourful characters and strange events similar to the classic show of the same name.

Other tracks that fill up the project are quite entertaining, and while the production flourishes to some degree, the overall theme remains constant and doesn’t stray far from the core subject. The trippy “Report Da Bxtch!” finds J-Merk delivering a faux melodic run in his own expressiveness. Once again, he reminds listeners of his A-game and how quick he is to cut off a side piece if she is acting too clingy. “Flip4it!” is a moody, dark trap cut that is layered with laidback melodies and whispered notes; however, the topic is a bit mundane, but the hook is somewhat catchy. The final track  “Ki$$ of Death” helps bring things full circle with another bout of bravado and lyrical jousting. Bolstered by the eerie and menacing backdrop, J-Merk thrills listeners with bars like “”I might just pull your card, Remy LeBeau, I’m getting guap and I cannot let go, I’m not the type to go do what was told, she sucked on my dick and extracted my soul!,” highlighting his dark humour and unorthodox thought process.

Overall, the production by BETT1 is magnificent, well-crafted, and sometimes feels similar, but it gets the job done for creating the right canvas for J-Merk’s black humour and dark lyrics.
