Fredericton, NB-based emerging rapper HINCH makes his debut appearance on TWIB with his brand new album, Poetry Is The Art Of Death. The 10-track project explores the ins and outs, ups and downs of chasing one’s dreams in the face of surmounting odds. Here, HINCH brings forward his personality with engaging stories, vivid raps and solid beats to match.

The project kicks off with the title track which help set the tone perfectly. Backed by Dreamlife’s cinematic and somewhat moody backdrop brimming wth a dark pensive textures and punchy drums, HINCH gives the audience a first hand view of the creative’s dilemma. In the effort to balance life and music career goals, he acknowledges the set backs, doubts and hurdles with lines like pursuing music, trying to win but I keep losing/Every year that I get older, starts to feel like an illusion/And my family supports me, gotta show them that this isn’t a facade/risk I’m taking, man I owe it to my mum/I owe it to my friends and the fans that support us.” This is followed by “Shooting Star,” a reflective and aspirational track brimming with warm textures and insightful bars from the rapper. Both tracks feature singer Missy B who adds her distinctive melodic voice to the track, giving them that classic R&B/hiphop infused vibe reminiscent of the 90s but with a modern twist. The uplifting theme is carried over into “Gold,” a celebratory tune brimming with raw energy and the feeling of soaking in every win. HINCH is joined by MXCHAELSHABAZZ and together they respectively share their come-up stories.

HINCH is not afraid to push the musical boundary and try new things on the project. On the Insane Beatz-produced “Writing In The Rain,” HINCH and fellow artist NOXX pour their all over a solemn guitar-driven soundscape as they trade tales about down times and the weight of a cloudy day. The track offers something refreshing with its soul-pop vibe and a similar feel in terms of sound is heard on “Pressure.” The retro-tinged production is crispy clean and punchy while HINCH’s commanding flow and vivid storytelling take the cake. Once again, he unveils a new layer to his artistry by being vulnerable and acknowledging the arduos path he must follow in order to be successful. Lines like tired of losing hope on this road , broken promises/Frames hanging of my wall from old accomplishments/I’m still trying to find my way/shit I’m still trying to find my lane  underpin his mission statement and give listeners a true picture of a world-weary man.

The last two tracks see HINCH teaming up once again with DopeBoyzMuzic, who produces both tracks.  The first “All My Fault” features Still M.A.D and is a go-getter anthem of some sort. Here, HINCH achieves self-awareness and sees self-belief as the way to push past the naysayers and detractors. The final track, “Poetry,” featuring CONS helps bring the project full circle with its scenic soundscape and raw bravado from the emcees. The thematic cut captures unfiltered lyricism coloured with personal stories. Other notable tracks include the summer-tinged uplifting “100k” (Ft. Keith Lethal) , the heartfelt and nostalgic “Influence” which shows HINCH’s transition from a reckless youth to a responsible man and  “Love Sick” which dives into the matters of the heart. Here, HINCH shows regret and reflects on a past relationship and the lingering feeling of that special someone who is difficult to forget.

Overall, Poetry Is The Art Of Death is a hard-hitting and biting body of work that seamlessly blends top nothc story telling, lyricism with smooth engaging beats. Topically, it is highly relatable and is grounded while the listenability is punctuated by the well-crafted hooks and beats.
