“Smoking grand daddy purp reminiscing my grand pops/We discussing cash, Mint jelly for the lamb chops/Shoot the striper, circle round and I double back/You getting cheese but your sons are rats that’s the fucking trap.”
“I need a vacation, sometimes I feel I ain’t doing enough/Fit to make em say I’m doing too much/Taking my foot off the brakes/Put my forces to the pedal to success/Don’t leave my weapon in the car and yeah I had some runnings with the law/I’m far removed there is no exceptions to the rules cause I deserve to win it all”
The verses are as visually gripping as can be, and it feels like a return to where the duo left off on the first installment of INFAMOUS WIZZARDY. “CALISTHENICS(STICK UP)” is a play on fitness and running pockets and finds Grand Wizzard MC and Jay Will pushing up on the opposition with brute force over a dark and upbeat soundscape. Next is the Conductor Williams-produced track “F THEM IF THEY DON’T F WITH US,” an unapologetic piece that sums up the duo’s stance on fraternity and the us-versus-them concept. The project goes darker as they lean into “HALLOWEEN,” where the duo share gritty tales of the streets and its many casualties as follows
“I’ve been living by 3 letters, it’s M.O.E/and still fuck you pay me, life’s a beach chair/ They never said it would be fair, I’ve seen niggaz play foul and fucked up the game, wasn’t no referees there.”
“Stepping on my toes, got em knocked off his feet, nigga, then his soul left him/Going against the elder god, you block your own blessings/we look like what the verge become/First degree and murder 1s/Paint the town, fire bomb the city till it burns to dust.”
The duo leave no stone unturned and delivers solid performances with no-holds-barred lyrics and graphic stories that keep listeners locked in. The next tracks highlight the duo’s penchant for securing their finances with various schemes. From the go-getter mentality displayed on “HAND OVER THE MONEY OR ELSE (H.O.T.M.O.E)” to the toasting of success on “MONEY TEAM REPRESENT,” Grand Wizzard MC and Jay Will continue to dazzle with their no-nonsense bars as follows
“Stories should be theatres, look how I persevere/There’s penalties for encroaching/I took a half time and made it a whole one/Made my plays and sold out/Yeah I’m true to my culture, an old soul I’m hoping that I don’t gotta show a nigga the ropes.”
“…The not so modern life of Rocko/In the rain, hydroplaning/I be dodging all the potholes/Stepping out the smoke screen, a pot smoke/vicious elder god flow/Mind unravelling, time traveller/Be skipping over timezones/Most divinely designed poems.”
This is followed by “72′ DOLPHINS,” a drumless and scenic track that evokes nostalgia a sthe duo references pop culture and memories from the past that shaped their present status. “WHAT ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS,” tackles the subject of brotherhood and friendship with bars like
“Earn my stripes it was rigorous, I just made it look easy/In a circle with winners/so when they thought I was finished, I came right back in a brand new bag/Diamond dancing like James Brown but yours from a lab/Braggadocious, came for the rats and roaches/dressed to kill, the louis sneakers with the matching holsters”
“Face off and take your smile off/Never ride with the crash outs/Never on the cash route/Per diem, play your stash out/The posse finna mash out/Ghostface killah’s got the stocking for the mask, when we clapping, you’re assed out.”
It’s a beautifully patterned track that blends street surrealism with surgeon-like precision, where each bar connects to the next. Other notable tracks include the soulful “GET OFF MY LAWN,” or the ethereal sounds of “FLY SHIT EXTRAORDINAIRE,” which explore exotic spots and the trappings of success. “1980’S DOPE” takes listeners back to a decade when dope ruled the streets and decimated black neighbourhoods with its synth-driven backdrop.
The project closed out with two bonus tracks, “THE ARTISTRY (BONUS)” and “BOOMING AS USUAL (BONUS).” The former has a soulful and bittersweet soundscape that finds the duo contemplating their moves on the chessboard of life, while the latter is built on a chip-tune soundscape with punchy drums and once more highlights the duo’s fiery lyricism.
At the end of the day, INFAMOUS WIZZARDY 2 is another notch on their belts and a win for lovers of pure lyricism over tight beats.
