Emerging Detroit rapper/producer Drew Skeyewalker returns with a brand new project entitled Sincerely, Dexter. The 8-track project pays homage to his hometown of Detroit and the struggles that shaped his life to become the man that he is now.
The project starts on a smooth note with the track “PEACHY.” Over a sublime and soulful backdrop comprising ethereal pads and mellow tones, Drew Skeyewalker shows us his accomplishments and tailored lifestyle that he sacrificed everything for. He acknowledges his legacy-building skills and flexes on the mic with lines like “Good living, exotic marble counter shit/My bitch eating too but I ain’t trying to count her shit/I’m out the way, that’s why you clout chasers can’t find me/Just schedule up a meeting, make sure it’s timely”
At the end of it all, he shows gratitude for the grind and how life is peachy. The next track, “TOMAHAWK,” features D-Nutty, and it’s a profound look at loyalty, brotherhood and growth. The production is smooth and cinematic, which fits with the rappers’ vivid imagery and storytelling that stems from their go-getter mindset. The lyrical chemistry between Drew Skeyewalker and D-Nutty is present to a degree, as they each present different sides to the same coin. This leads into the laid-back, relaxing “STELLAVISION” which blends street hustle energy with black excellence. The title is a play on Stellar vision and a portmanteau of Stella (from Stella Got Her Groove Back) and Television, and it’s another highlight on the project for us for many reasons. One of which is the lyrical versatility shown throughout, with Drew Skeyewalker exploring a familiar topic through different lenses, with lines like
“Great bottom brim/ old English D on my fitted/ This is a different cloth, you can tell how I’m knitted/Hop into that green when I jump, I ribbit/Right where the W’s be, but this ain’t television.”
If we sit closely with the songwriting and lyrics, Drew Skeyewalker treads similar plains but on his own terms. He wears the mantle of success like a banner and revels in the soft life after a long time grinding and toiling. Tracks like “BOOM!” and “FEELS SO GOOD” truly exemplify the rapper’s trajectory and success. Lines like “I’m just trying to elevate, doing corporate business/Most niggaz broke, I’m not surprised they don’t listen/ Pockets full of hundreds like the comments section/They already know I got it, they don’t ask no questions” bring listeners up to speed as he details his latest venture. The project continues to raise the stakes with urgency and calm moments, as shown on “LESS CLOUTED,” which follows the man on his nonstop journey through this thing called life, while “GREEN THUMBS” is a reflection from the past to the present. Both tracks do have different vibes, with the former a West Coast-tinged flavour and the latter an East Coast underground feel akin to Roc Marciano-produced cuts.
The final track is “CUDI SLIDE,” echoing Drew Skeyewalker’s lifelong ambition and independence. Backed by a moody cinematic piano riff with minimal grooves, the emcee shares his formula for living: get money, slide to the right and stay out of sight. A simple and effective strategy, if we may add. Overall, Sincerely, Dexter is a masterclass in aspirations, goal chasing and the economic growth of a young black man who has laser-focused determination.
