Multi-genre DJ/songwriter/producer DJ SoulChild AC brings a whole new meaning to genre-blending on his new album Douby. The 15-track project takes elements from hip-hop, house, soul, Brazilian funk, R&B/soul, jazz and experimental music to create a one-of-a-kind album.
The project opens up on an energetic note with “APOCOLYTPTO,” which is an uplifting club banger that fuses modern R&B with electronic dance sensibilities. Bolstered by heavy four-to-the-floor drums, minimalistic instrumentation and a rich vocal accompaniment. The track is a celebratory anthem for everyone to join in the fun of being alive. “BOUNCE PT2” has an ethereal flute-like synth with thick 808-driven Jersey club groove and features a melodic rap performance that taps into the modern trap flow style made popular by luminaries like Future and his cohorts. “BOUNCE REVISED,” as the title suggests, revisits the previous track with an emphasis on the instrumentation in an extended fashion. The use of stutter effects on the vocal samples is pronounced, and a recurring “bounce” laden hook is layered at different parts of the song. “EAT IT UP” is a standout track that blends electronic dub with reggaeton-styled grooves and a sultry vocal performance. The track is heavy on recurring motifs and subtle innuendoes highlighted by the bilingual vocalist who bridges the gap between English and Spanish language, while “ENVY” talks about one of the deadly seven sins and explores the concept of contentment and appreciation. The production is dynamic and punchy, with DJ SoulChild AC going the extra mile with his multi-layered sampling approach. Fusing Kaytranada-styled drums with Busta Rhymes‘ “Keep your hands where my eyes can see” and a soulful ambiance, the result is a marriage of hypnotic grooves and insightful lyrics that everyone can relate to.

“I DON’T WANT EM” starts with a classic soul sample, and I must add, the way it has been repurposed is brilliant. The vocals and soft piano chords are filtered over a sturdy drum groove, and the icing on the cake is the rapper who flows with a sultry and mesmerizing voice. Overall, the production is dynamic, and I love the way the grooves keep changing. “KICK BACK” is an offbeat cut that uses Jersey club/trap drum styles as the focal point. The chords here are moody and somewhat discordant, while the vocal runs have an unorthodox drawl that sounds off-center but purposeful. “KITTY KAT KAT PT 2” is a fiery club banger that will work well in strip clubs and underground dance lounges. The track highlights the feminine aura of the modern boss chick who doesn’t shy away from securing the bag and embracing her sexuality without constraints. The rap verses are seductively intense and are tied by a sampled hook that underscores the title. “KITTY KAT KAT” is the instrumental version and, in true DJ mix fashion, emphasizes the thundering groove and dance-driven energy of the track. This is a solid track that will work well on the dance floor and multi-style dance competitions.

The project continues to marry classic samples with modern musical styles as seen on  “LOVERS GROOVE,” a modern electronic dance/R&B infused jam that is punctuated by rich vocal performances and a solid bounce that makes it perfect for your new age R&B playlist. “MORE TO THE MUSIC” talks about the true essence of music and how we lost the feeling in these modern times, where everything is content and social-media algorithm-driven. The lyrics are insightful and anchor on the power of nostalgia and sentimental value. The production on “MORE TO THE MUSIC” features DJ SoulChild AC’s signature drums, heavily compressed, smooth and punchy and the layered samples punctuated with original musical arrangements. “PARIS MEETS RIO” flips Brazilian funk grooves with soft and sublime textures that sound like a live carnival. The title is an ode to the famous cities where life-changing music is made, and this is no exception. Another standout track for us here. “SAO PAULO” continues with the Brazilian-inspired sounds and takes it up a notch with jazz-house elements and recurring vocal motifs that play like a mantra from start to finish. “STUDIO 54 TWO” has a moody and cinematic aesthetic that captures the past. The vocal and string samples are underpinned by a classic drum break, thumping four-to-the-floor drum loops and excellent sound design that rises to a plateau at certain parts. The final track, “THE MOOVEMENT,” is a solid closer as it tones down the energy of the previous dance-oriented tracks with a smooth soulful backdrop and reflective songwriting.

Overall Douby delivers nonstop action from start to finish. The tracks are energetic, the choruses are catchy and sprinkled with a bit of insight, the producer covers a handful of topics while staying true to his versatility.
