Grenoble-based genre-bending experimental artist Changeline is pushing the creative limits with her unorthodox musical style. Taking elements from dark pop, rock, and hip-hop with an experimental edge and themes that revolve around self-discovery, expression, and identity, Changeline aims to present art in a unique way that strays from the norm. Her latest release THE.DRAW.OF.A.NEW.SHAPE  is an 11-track project that explores the core being of her fully formed identity. The title is a homage to her present mindset and glorification of what she has always been, and now the world needs to know as well. She bares it all on all the tracks, each track uncovering her true self like an onion layer. A new shape, if you will, but more importantly, the metamorphosis of an individual who has found herself within this world’s chaotic landscape.

The opening salvo “CHANGE” pt1.” is a fiery entry that sets the tone without an atom of doubt. Backed by a pounding bass-heavy backdrop, Changeline charges in with a no-holds-barred performance ripe with unfiltered bars that aim for the jugular. Joining her is fellow rapper DAMAG3, who adds his 2 cents on the track. The next track, “SEX.WITH.DEATH” is an upbeat dark pop-infused record that weaves themes of abuse, pain, to inner strength and self-ownership.  The fast-paced vibe is a metaphor for Changeline’s transformation as she slowly sheds her past and embraces a new life that fulfills her spirit. This is followed by the plucky “50.TASKS” with its distorted bass lines, moody textures and off-kilter sound design. This is all underpinned by her expressive flow and edgy rhymes that dwell on self-discovery, death, and friendship that serve and preserve her true spirit. The switch from the plucky verse to the cinematic chorus adds an unusual but complementary dynamic to the transformative theme of the project. Changeline switches up once more on “VOICES.IN.MY.PHONE,” an unapologetic diss track that is inspired by mean messages from detractors whose lame attempts to derail the rapper fall flat. Here, Changeline goes for the head with precise verbal shots as she takes back her power with much gusto. On a deeper note, it also explores the pressures of being a trans woman caught in the crossfire of bigots, but fortunately, she has grown a thick skin enough to ricochet whatever they throw at her.

I must add, the production value and Changeline’s nonconformist style take the cake as each track offers something new and distinct. How she fuses real-time issues with a touch of cheekiness and playful vibes is noteworthy, and most importantly, she manages not to lose the plot by being grounded at all times. “appreciate.themoment”  is a short interlude that reminds listeners to seize every passing moment. On  “UP.IN.THE.BAY,” Changeline embraces her raw, bravado spirit while questioning her motives for chasing her musical dreams. Is she doing it for the sake of it or something greater? Is she authentic or seeking external validation? These are the questions Changeline poses to herself on this insightful track. This is followed by  “CHANGE.pt2,” a laidback, solemn piece that continues from where the first instalment left off, with the rapper looking introspectively on the concept of change. The final track “THE.DRAW.OF.A.NEW.SHAPE” is a boisterious and heavy-hitting track comprising futuristic laer blips, plucky bass synths, punchy drums, and helps bring the project to a close. We get to hear Changeline once again in her final super Saiyan form as she embodies the spirit of what it means to be different.

Other notable tracks include the NOVÂFLED-assisted  “caretaker,”  the hard-hitting “ELEVATE,” and the off-kilter “THE.TRUTH.AND.ONLY.TRUTH.” The tracks continue Changeline’s life journey and experiences dealing with identity politics, self-care and mental health challenges. Overall, THE.DRAW.OF.A.NEW.SHAPE is a potpourri of sounds, emotions and energies. The overarching themes of identity and change stay consistent throughout, and the progression of emotions and the state of becoming all add nuance to the project and seal the deal perfectly.
