Philadelphia, PA-based singer/entertainer Tim Johnson Jr delivers a refreshing body of work entitled Fly Girl. The 13-track project is a refreshing take on summer-pop-R&B  and dance musical styles. With a background in acting on stage and the natural charisma that makes his youth appeal undeniable, Tim Johnson Jr is ready to shake the world with this project.

The overarching feel of the project will leave listeners in nostalgic mode as Tim Johnson Jr taps into a wide variety of musical styles from the past to the present. From the upbeat pop number “Fly Girl” to the Dark child-inspired production on “Just for the Two of Us” or the energetic electronic vibes on “The Rising of the Sun,” the singer weaves a tapestry of sound that is dynamic, expressive and catchy all at once. His voice is soulful and emotionally punchy, and his lyrics are heartfelt, uplifting, and honest. On “The View Is Better With You,” the singer brings back a classic 90s R&B vibe with a modern feel.

The project never stays on one tangent, as Tim Johnson Jr keeps pushing the musical envelope. His love for different genres and the ability to actually incorporate different styles into his repertoire needs to be acknowledged. From 90s R&B, modern dance/pop-infused jams, hip-hop inspired R&B and experimental soul, the singer has more than enough for everyone. Tracks like “Timeless” and “Summer in the Rain” are a testament to this. The former is an upbeat summer jam while the latter is a solemn alternative R&B cut that is reminiscent of the mid-2000s. On “Sherbet Skies,” the mood switches once again with an ethereal, dreamy soundscape underpinned by rich melodic runs and heartfelt lyrics that is adulation adulation-filled for that special someone. The final track, “Everyday People,” is an uplifting piece that speaks to the never-ending grind we all go through to survive. This is the perfect motivational anthem for everyone out there doing their best and smiling while hiding the pain.

Other notable tracks include the atmospheric “Collide,” and “Don’t Hold Back” which both incorporates elements of Afrobeats with experimental R&B elements. Others like the soul-stirring ballad “Forever Us,” the explorative “Layers,” and  the soothing “You’re All I’ve Been Looking For” showcase his vocal range and versatility as an artist.  From a listen, one can hear the influences that helped shape his sound but most importantly, how he repurposes these influences into something unique and refreshing.
