Athens, GA-based multi-genre band Trvy & the Enemy make their debut appearance on TWIB with their brand new project entitled Choose Your Enemy. The 6-track body of work blends elements from Psychedelic hiphop-Trap with Punk vibes and touches of jazz/funk and even Afrobeat. It is quite a lot to unpack so before we dive into it let’s get a sense of who the band is. Led by solo artist Trvy who has a handful of albums under his belt and is a seasoned artist in Georgia’s underground hip-hop scene. An idea sparked in his head to form a live band after he did a “Tiny Desk” styled performance with a live band in 2021. He then proceeded to recruit three childhood friends who share an uncanny musical chemistry, and thus The Enemy (no pun intended) was born.

The first track “Matthew McConaughey” is a groovy tune with punchy drums, somewhat brooding strings with a prevalent bassline. Aside from the eye-popping title, the track stands out for its rich and layered textures and vibrant ambiance. Here, Trvy steps to the podium with his gruff vocals that weave together engaging raps and smooth melodies in the same breath. Trvy embodies the spirit of the individual ready to go the whole nine as he faces the odds. Next is the title track “Choose Your Enemy”, a rousing and brooding tune that is anchored on urgency and the impact of human resilience. The cinematic backdrop underpinned by lines like “Tell me whats real, tell how my body jump straight into the field/Can’t get enough, stuck in the mud/Carry my shield, dirty and dark I know how it feel” captures Trvy’s pursuit of his goals and the obstacles standing in his way. This is followed by “Broke On Tour”, which is comprised of punchy dark trap textures with electrifying rock guitar arrangements. Trvy steps to the podium and shares his frustrations and numerous experiences in the game. He is not new to the drama and he dusts the bruises off his shoulder like it’s nothing. next is “Break Free”, a reflective tune that explores personal loss, trauma and solemn moments. Trvy peppers the sombre backdrop with heartfelt songwriting and soothing melodies as he pours his heart on wax and shows audiences his vulnerable side.

“Sirens” is a booming and vibrant jam that talks about social-political issues and his take on the state of affairs. He takes on an irreverent spirit and throws a proverbial middle finger up to the system. The final track “Falling Thru Static” has a soulful and nostalgia-inducing vibe and sees Trvy finally in a comfortable zone. He gives listeners a glimpse into his life, the ups, downs and grey areas where nothing matters. It serves as a form of release as we hear him get a lot of weight off his shoulders.

Overall Choose Your Enemy, is a brilliant effort that bridges a potpourri of musical styles threaded by relatable, conscious and profound songwriting. It doesn’t matter what genre you favour, the lyrics will grab you and the layered production will keep you glued from start to finish.
