Definition is an 11-track instrumental project from Portland, Oregon-based experimental producer The Numb Project. This project is their second album released in 2024 and it’s inspired by jazz.

“New Direction” sets the tone neatly with pulsating basslines, slinking pads and an ominous vocal-like synth that floats from left to right. The track oozes brooding vibes with a touch of mystery as it progresses with subtle glitchy effects and rich sound design techniques. This is followed by “Turn,” a punchy boombap drum-driven piece laced with ethereal strings and 80s-styled synths reminiscent of vapor-wave beats. The track feels like a trippy adventure into an unknown terrain where possibilities are endless. Next up is “Morning Kidz,” a mellow, off-beat track comprising a thick, prevalent bassline with discordant textures. The track progresses further with the introduction of new elements, like soft guitar licks, plucky leads and summery keys, creating an unusual ambiance that is both solemn and ominous. I particularly love the unique jazz vibes on “Jay Strides,” but it must be said that the jazz element is not the prevalent aesthetic as there is so much to unpack. From the trip-hop grooves, and neo-soul chords, to the ethereal pads, the ears are bombarded with a plethora of soothing sounds that keep one engaged from start to finish.

The Numb Project takes liberty with its approach to sound and lifts several elements from different quarters to get the job done. Tracks like “Sphere 24” and “Piper” break the mould with the use of non-conforming arrangements and sparse but dynamic instrumentation that lie between surrealism and suspense. I was not sure of what to expect with “Marty and the Penguins,” but I must add that it’s another of my favourites. It has a playful tonal synth, a solemn string/ violin backdrop, and wailing vocal samples and airy horn passes. The fun continues with the moody and mysterious-sounding “Simple Waves .“ The atmospheric synths, sublime effects and glitchy drums all come together to create a scenic ambiance reminiscent of the retro cartoon Captain Scarlet.

The project closes out with the soulful “Fatback” and the snapping drums on “Lasso”. Both tracks are uniquely different with the latter embodying the dark trippy hiphop sound with the former employing dusty jazzy samples as it’s baseline. These tracks help close things out with distinct sounds showcasing The Numb Project’s versatility and unpredictable style.

Other dope tracks include the solemn “Broken Time” with its jazzy horns, discordant piano riffs and use of vocals to accentuate the emotional depth of the track.
