Emerging artist Scartown Koom proceeds to set the record straight in his new album Rude Awakening. The 9-track project runs through a handful of topics ranging from love, aspirational themes, loyalty, infatuation and a high dose of reflection.
“rude awakening* “ sees Scartown Koom taking responsibility for his life and the agency of his future by embodying a focused mindset. As the title suggests, it is a wake-up call for the young man to rise to the occasion. He acknowledges his mistakes and details the steps he is taking to be successful and sets the best example for those who look up to him. Over the soulful and reflective soundscape, the rapper gives us a heartfelt and candid take on his life. This is followed by the cinematic sounds of “Come Around”, the track has a discordant tone with thick 808-driven trap drums. Here, Scartown delivers a love tale using his signature melody-laced flow. He sounds at ease here and not afraid to pour adulations on that special someone who completes him. If the previous track feels like a night out,“8AM” continues where it left off and we follow Scartown getting ready for his daily runs as he croons “When the sun shines, you gotta wake up”. As the saying goes, one has to balance play with work and Scartown is in his element here and reminds us that he is not taking any shorts or losses.
Scartown has been holding down the fort so far and the first feature comes on the hard-hitting aspirational track “The Bag” featuring IPLZM3021. The track has a cinematic and urgent feel with its brooding synths and punchy drums. On the vocal side of things, both emcees bring their distinct style to the forefront and it’s quite off-kilter and engaging from start to finish. This leads into “Easier Said”, with its airy synth backline and woozy bass line and Scartown’s heartfelt tale about his ex and the lingering feelings that never seem to go away. The next two tracks “Come Thru-interlude” and “2AM” take the project into different lanes. The former features an unnamed vocalist singing over a surreal and somewhat atmospheric soundscape while the latter features ROYALEZ who brings his expressive melodic flow to the forefront.
The EP comes to a close with the pop-infused tune “Time Heals All (Since I Have A Lover)” and the love ballad “ballad of an addict”. Overall, Scartown can channel his emotions and give audiences relatable tracks with varied subject matter and his love for cinematic soundscape helps bring his words to life.
