St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands-based singer/songwriter Kenya Eugene is blazing a trail as an artist who pushes the musical envelope with every release. Her latest project You Are I is a 4 track body of work that blends Roots Reggae with contemporary soul. The project is a showcase of her vocal strength and knack for diving into socially conscious themes that leave listeners with gems.

The project starts with the uplifting “I And I,” bolstered by solemn pads, rich guitar licks and an undeniable groove underpinned by Eugene’s hypnotic vocal performance. Here, she dives into the concept of identity from the black perspective. She looks at the true origins of blackness, the years of pushback and the resurgence of the real black identity. The message is clear, Kenya Eugene doesn’t shy away from her roots and reminds us not to do the same. The following song  “Lift Up My Head” is another gem that delivers a timeless message of perseverance in the face of doubt and tribulations. Here, Eugene sets the tone with lines like If Jah is at my side/who can be against me/Good and evil battling for centuries” which underpin her faith and beliefs. The track has a warm and soothing feel and is brimming with inspiration with a touch of praise and worship elements that rise to a crescendo in the chorus section.

“In and Outtah Love” explores the ups and downs of love. Kenya dives into the complexities and uncertainty that come with love. From the confusion, heartbreak, euphoria and the emotional rollercoaster that keeps one coming back for her, Eugene details it all. Her rich vocal runs evoke raw emotions and capture the reality of falling in and out of love. The final track “You Are I” is the perfect way to end with a heartfelt message of finding one’s self-worth. Backed by the cinematic soundscape brimming with lush textures, bright guitar riffs and smooth rhythms, Eugene delivers a brilliant vocal performance ripe with sublime melodies and uplifting lyrics reminding listeners of their self-worth.

The production on the EP is superb and thanks must be given to Kenya Eugene’s team made up of Alfred “TippyI ” Laurent of I-Grade Records, and the renowned Zion I Kings production collective. The crew did a marvellous job of bringing back the classic roots reggae vibe that we all grew up on.
