Philadelphia, PA-based rapper/songwriter who goes by the moniker  IND!FFRENT unveils his new album Positive Vibes & Anger Issues Deluxe Edition. The “Positive Vibes & Anger Issues” (Deluxe Edition) is essentially an extended version of the original and it’s a whooping 21-track album with short skits that play into the music therapy concept. The arrangement is sequentially put together to follow a linear timeline filled with emotional cycles that accentuate the non-monlithic nature of human life. As the title sugests, it paints a picture of duality in the mind and the mental health challenges people face from time to time and serves as an anchor of sort for anyone going through similar issues.
I would start off by saying, the therapy concept is not new and I have reviewed more than a handle of projects with similar set pieces but IND!FFRENT’s approach is slightly different, because it is done subtely instead of being forced on the listener. The project opens with “The Session Begins” whoch set the emotional tone perfectly for the first track “Positive Vibes” to come into play. This pust the project on a bright and high note with this uplifting cut. The next track “Do It” is another upbeat jam and it has a blend of bravado and apsirational energy with insightful bars about self-belief and the power of manifestation. “Be Great” is a testament to IND!FFRENT’s  go getter demeanour while “Playing Games” is about a shady chick who tries to throw the rapper into a loop. On the flipside, “True Love” shows his emotional side as he pours adulation on that special someone. Joining hi on the track is singer/songwriter Jhaeyai who adds a soothing melodic touch to the mix and together the duo remind us that sometimes you have to trust your heart to find true love. The next track “Feels So Right” is a solemn piece about lost love and once again,IND!FFRENT reminds us that he is not afraid to be vulnerable.
The skits help to thread the tracks with their reflective and insightful themes about self assessment, awareness and the human flaws that help make us into who we are. Production wise, the project weaves quite a lot ranging from modern R&B/trap/pop with jersey club bangers. “Taking Risk” has a punchy bass-driven backdrop while “trouble” has a moody and dark vibe that fits IND!FFRENT’s storytelling about watching one’s words and steps in this cold world.  The project’c subject matter do vary and listeners get a sense of urgency throughout the length of the album with tracks like “Make It Make Sense”, which dive into themes of brotherhood and friendship
How we beefing, Niggaz down to ride, ain’t no suicide/going slide, could be homicide/look me in my eye” although “Leave Me Alone” has a similar feel albeit with a punchier drum but here the rapper pours his anger on wax as he pushes away the detractors and haters. “Voices in My Head” takes the mental anguish to a higher plateau as IND!FFRENT enters the dark territory. Diving into the concept of inner demons and the batttle for his sanity, IND!FFRENT delivers a thought-povoking track with horror-core elements. The project continues to push the musical boundary with a handful of sounds that traverse the modern R&B/trap sphere with a touch of pop. “Everybody Dies” has a solemn aesthetic and explores mortality and religion and how beliefs could chnaged over time. “Going Up”  is about success and the sacrifices that come with the territory while also looking at the effects of losing one’s integrity in the process. The last two tracks “Free” and “O.T.O.T.W(ON TOP OF THE WORLD)” bring the project to a close with relatable and heartfelt topics. The former
talks about breaking free from the constraints of society and the opinions of others while the latter is an aspirational/celebratory track that helps close the project on a high note. The final outro “A Pause, Not A Conclusion” serves as a reminder that life continus to move, even with the wins, the troubles never truly go away but it’s ok to take a breather and take stock of what life has given us.
The best parts on the projects do outweigh the underwhelming parts. Most of the beats are dope, while just a few had me bored but from a subject matter, they do fit the bill and I can’t be mad at that.
Overall, Positive Vibes & Anger Issues Deluxe Edition is chock-full of moments that reshape and redirect IND!FFRENT’s life trajectory but more importantly shows the natural growth of a young man trying to find his footing in this world.
