“Rock Steady” is the latest single from London-based singer-songwriter and producer BVDHI (pronounced ‘boo-dee’), who is currently working on a full-length project. Known for her futuristic neo soul style and being hands-on with her music, the singer delivers a stunning performance bolstered by a hypnotic backdrop and sultry melodic runs. The self-produced track leans on the concept of less is more as she goes for a bare bones but layered approach, and the result is a brilliant exploration into the dichotomies of pleasure and pain. Her honeyed vocals set the tone as she dives into a relationship that she knows is bad for her, but the pleasure she derives from it sort of makes it worth the experience.
Lines like “But its ok I’m fine/Left a stain of you on the inside/You’re my high, give me drive, give me purpose/MX-5 but I’m blind” underscore the feelings of euphoria, but overall, it’s a lesson for everyone to learn from.
Entirely written, composed and produced by BVDHI herself, Rock Steady combats the fact that less than 10% of music released in the UK is produced by women.
