Hungarian producer Àbáse ((Szabolcs Bognar)) makes a grand entry on TWIB with his newest release titled “Elevate” featuring NY-based artist Jessie Davis. The multi-talented instrumentalist comes through with a blend of styles and musical elements from jazz, hip-hop to experimental soul on this tune. He starts it off with soft keys backed by Davies’s mellow vocal hums that build up into entrancing harmonies as the beat progresses. The progression sure gets better as it introduces new elements to broaden the dynamics from soul-drenched harmonizations to the nostalgia-inducing flute solo which transitions into a vocal scratch section. Another element to point out is the fact that Àbáse recorded some parts of the song while on tour. Jessie Davis laid her vocals during her first European tour in Budapest while the outro you hear was done on the producer’s mobile phone during a live hip hop jam session soundcheck before his show.
The word “àbáse” comes from the West African Yoruba language and stands for “collaboration” – a key element of Àbáse’s music, as he brings versatile artists together to push genre and style boundaries. Àbáse studied at the Jazz Conservatory in Budapest and has had residencies in Paris, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador de Bahia and is currently based in Berlin.
