Charlotte, NC, USA-based genre-fusing trio Soulganic are back with their fifth album Phosphene. the 8-track project is a testament to their versatility and years of hard work grinding on the indie soul music live scene. anchored on their repertoire as seasoned musicians who blend modern soul vibes, and off-kilter funk arrangements with jazz sensibilities and the energy of alternative rock. The new album takes inspiration from the phenomenon where individuals perceive light without visual stimulus. Ultimately the project aims to lead audiences on a journey through soundscapes that explore the unseen, the unheard, and the unknown.

The project starts on a high note with the pulsating guitar licks of “Family Ties” which slowly soars into an anthemic piece that brings together edgy rock vibes with a touch of jazz-soul. Followed by the laidback “Long Way Home” comprising bluesy guitar licks and soft grooves underpinned by soothing melodic runs. The track dwells on true love and is filled with admiration for that special someone. Next is the heavy rock tune “Waiting,” is propelled by a rousing electric guitar riff and solemn pads. The vocals here complement the cinematic backdrop with its soul-stirring attributes and rich runs. The trio employ an interesting musical twist on the pop-funk infused “Pulling Me (Pushing Me)” which comprises four-to-the-floor grooves, bright soulful guitars and heartwarming lyrics that explore undeniable love. The title track “Phosphene” is a culmination of the trio as they combine a fantastic lively arrangement that showcases their strengths as musicians. From the dynamic arrangement that blends lively drums, expressive vocal performance and progressively forward-thinking approach.

Other notable tracks include the nostalgia-inducing “Bear That Weight,” the cinematic “Scotland Yard” that soars with an electrifying guitar solo and hard-hitting rhythm section and the warm reflective energy on  the heartwarming“Yours.” These tracks traverse a spectrum of musical styles and audiences are led through the ebb of flow of musical vibes.

Overall Phosphene is raw, and energetic and breaks the mould in many ways. The band’s approach to straying from the norm and infusing layered arrangements, with a focus on evocative elements makes it brilliant from start to finish.
