I really dig how Robert Glasper is really getting back to the heart of what makes people love jazz. He takes melodies people know and love and adds musical virtuosity and personality to them. A lot of times we musicians get so caught up in worrying about who knows the most obscure standards or who can play the most ridiculous chops and we lose the audience. Most standards started as the pop tunes of previous eras in music. I’m also working to bridge the gap between contemporary audiences and virtuoso musicianship in a piano trio I’m working with.
