London/NYC-based Hungarian R&B and soul singer-songwriter Babé Sila’s newest release,  I told the sun about you, is a 5-track EP that follows a love journey. From the euphoria of blossoming love, butterflies in the tummy feeling, the withering of the honeymoon stage, to trepidations and dissolution of the union,  the EP takes listeners on an emotional rollercoaster.

The EP starts with “Happiness,” an aptly titled track that opens the floodgates of emotions. Bolstered by bright keys, warm cinematic pads with glowing trills and slow build-ups, Babé Sila delivers an adulation-filled ballad that encapsulates the dreamy feeling of finding true love. Her soft vocal tone and heartfelt lyrics, combined with the lush, soulful soundscape, help bring the feeling to life. The next song, “Found,” takes it up a notch with its bright, colourful textures and sturdy grooves. The track has a summertime feel and details the memories created with that special someone. This leads into “Forever (Bhebbak),” a mid-tempo folk-pop-R&B-infused piece where she reflects on the current situation with subtle hints of tension and doubt beginning to emerge, reflecting the complexities of a relationship.

Throughout the first part of the EP,  Sila’s lyrics centred on the essence of true love and the highs that come with it, but at the tail end, we get the pair of tracks, “Come Back” and “Summer Sings.”  The former is a guitar-laden ballad that sees Sila pouring her heart on wax as she wishes for brighter days and longs for her lover. The latter is bolstered by lush, solemn piano chords with soft drum grooves underpinned by Sila’s whispered vocals that slowly rise to a crescendo as the song progresses. These tracks help bring the euphoria to an end with the final song delivering a powerful, raw conclusion, leaving the listener with a sense of loss and reflection. Overall, it’s a compelling and honest portrayal of love’s fleeting nature, executed with sincerity and depth.

As a conceptual project, I told the sun about you, is a well-crafted body of work that shows progression in the cycle of love. It beautifully explores the journey of love, from tender beginnings to inevitable heartbreak. With soul-stirring melodies and heartfelt lyrics, it captures the emotional rollercoaster of a relationship, culminating in a powerful breakup that leaves a lasting impression. A raw and honest reflection on love’s fleeting nature.
