Versailles – INJVSTICE

Versailles first hit our radar with the cloudy neo-soul jam ‘TheBlock TheCity‘ which served as a snippet served as a gateway into her latest project INJVSTICE, a blend of hard-hitting raps and new age RnB-esque tracks. Versailles wastes no time in proving to the haters that she’s not one to joke with as she starts the project off with four back-to-back rap songs, after which she switches into vocalist mode, venturing into some left-field, surreal, string-driven soundscape that will draw comparisons to alternative RnB acts. With that being said, INJVSTICE is still an impressive body of work for the young lady, being that..

WIB Rap Radio – Mastermind Street Jam (20 Yrs Later)

I used to love taping the Mastermind Street Jam back in the 90’s. It was like getting a free mixtape every week.

I would tune in to the now-defunct Energy 108 and record the show. I could then enjoy it for weeks. I still have about 300 of these tapes.

Today, I wanted to share with you a broadcast from October 1994. Let’s jump back in time and hear what my favourite radio show sounded like 20 years ago this week.

Enjoy!

Five steez – These Kingston Times (Jamaica)

Finally These Kingston Times, the eight-track project from Jamaican emcee Five Steez, is here. It’s an honest and somewhat gritty outlook on the city of Kingston, and maybe it’s little too brief but hey, solid things come in small packages.

Listen up and get with the program.

“I wanted to paint my city the way I see it, and in a way I’ve never heard the story told before in music,” says Five Steez. “Since Hip Hop’s genesis with DJ Kool Herc, there has always been a Jamaican influence and involvement in the genre, but you’ve never heard about actual life..

DJ Premier Launches ‘Gang Starr’ Clothing Line, New Gang Starr Mixtape

Not interested in purely cutting up records, DJ Premier is cutting up cloth and has launched a Gang Starr clothing line. Gang Starr was, of course, the duo formed by DJ Premier and the late great Guru, and the line pays homage to the history with everything from the logo to lyrics on display. To go with the launch, Premo’s also put together a mixtape for ‘the true Gang Starr heads’. Head over to www.PremierWuzHere.com to check out the mix and the clothing!

BADBADNOTGOOD & Ghostface Killah – Gunshowers feat. Elzhi

Canadian jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD have entered remarkable prominence since their early beginnings cover Tyler, The Creator tracks, and now here they are teaming up with Ghostface Killah for a collaborative album. Ghostface must have also gotten a taste for live instrumentation following his collab with Adrian Younge, and from what I’ve already heard it sounds incredibly good. On ‘Gunshowers’, the lead track from the aforementioned album Elzhi joins Ghostface on the mic, with the lyricism reaching a supreme level, whilst BBNG demonstrate some gorgeous, melancholic live grooves underneath. The album, titled Sour Soul, has no set date..

Skywise – Leisure Suit (World Around Records Single Series)

This week’s single from World Around Record‘s current ‘Single Series’ is “Leisure Suit” by producer Skywise, another soundtrack piece for your autumnal activities.  Calmly exhaling horns and key arrangements that’ll emote something outta even the coldest hearts; all the poetry of the season is in here in mellow instrumental form.  Dig it, and check back on previous entries if you’re just getting on board.

Sean Brown – Going Through It feat. Futuristic

Sean Brown has been going hard with the mixtape and single releases, so there’s no surprise that the wordsmith is back to bless us with another joint; this one’s called ‘Going Through It’, and features the crooner Futuristic. This self-produced track includes fast spiting, paired with the dramatic snare and smooth vocals prove to be a mesh of musical goodness.

This is the first track off of the Mascot 2, set to drop October 22nd. I will definitely be adding this to my already long playlist.

The countdown ends NOW.
