Dance Eternal Spirit: Blackclassical v Jazz Meet

This friday I done a mix for the Jazz Meet who is now two years old!

NOTE: I’m publishing this on a 3G connection as BT has messed up my interwebs all week so a better write up will soon come in the meantime take a listen, especially to the Minoru Muraoka version of Take Five which is my lil hat tip to the great Dave Brubeck who sadly passed away earlier this week.

Dance Eternal Spirit #7 Strata Records

Last week Strata-East this week Strata. Same name but different without the east, similar logo etc. Visually they are almost identical but musically worlds apart. Strata Records came out of Detroit and had a more angular earthy funk edge to the music as you are about to hear…

I mean everybody knows and loves that organ grinder by Lyman Woodard Organization that was reissued a few years back..

SCRIMSHIRE – FORGOTTEN SONGS Free Download

As Adam Scrimshire works towards finishing his third album, he is celebrating a big 2012 by giving away a seven-track EP of songs written or recorded during the making of The Hollow. The EP contains covers by beautiful renditions of the All I do Stevie Wonder tune with the awesome vocals of Stacca… And. AND also a new version of the late (By late i mean Adam originally done that for my Sun Ra project back in 2010) Sun Ra When there is no Sun. What more do you want..

Blackclassical meets the Descendants of Strata-East

See what I did there with the title? Clever huh? Anyway, lots of people have asked me when you gonna do Strata-East, well here you go some of the more over looked stuff that hasn’t been done to death by any blogger that has some average blog search skills you know what I’m talking about.

Strata-East to be honest well this is my view was kinda inconsistent with the releases some are straight fire and some are ok and one or two are so-so and one is quite possibly the worst record ever recorded not to mention any names “Coughs”..

Sunday Service: Albert Ayler: Music is the Healing Force of the Universe

Today. They found him. In the River. Dead. Aged just 34. I’m not going to write about Ayler, better people have done that before me so I’ve made an audio tribute to him – The aim of this recording is to pick up where Ayler left off – and although some of the tunes are famous Ayler numbers, the overall style is almost a loft jazz extrapolation of Ayler’s ideals through prominent Jazz musicians who cite Ayler as an extra ordinary influence on their music. Music is the healing force of the universe, never a truer word spoken.

Albert Ayler..

Dance Eternal Spirit 6 Ode to Faruq Z. Bey and Groit Galaxy

The city of Detroit over the years has produced many a world-class musician from Motown to Pop from jazz to techno and among them are few iconic individualists — Saxophonist Faruq Z. Bey is one such character who sadly passed away on June 1st this year. Today as a mark of respect we pay homage to his Genius and his band Groit Galaxy.
“There is no music on paper because music is sound, wave form, vibration form. You can only refer to it. People mistake the symbol all too often, not only in music but in..

Dance Eternal Spirit #5 Baystate Records: The Magic Ritual

Baystate is the legendary Japanese Label that bootlegged many an artist, tut, tut… Here is a mix of some of my faves from this label, might turn into a bit of a series cause there so so much good gears on this catalogue…

In 1968, Harris heavily influenced by Archie Shepp formed the 360 Degree Music Experience with Moncur and pianist Dave Burrell, which performed at the 1969..

Putting Jazz Back On The Block With Quincy Jones

Alongside Black Classical and Beatthief, I have the enviable task of adding to what has already been a pretty vivid plethora of jazz on this coast of WIB.  Some say three’s a crowd but, hey, a crowded party is better than an empty party, right?

Blackclassical Dance Eternal Spirit #4 Freedom NOW!

Born January 10, 1924 in New Land, North Carolina, Roach was four when his family moved to New York. His aunt was pianist in the local baptist church, where the young Max sang. When he was eight, he began studying piano, when he was 12, his father bought him a drum kit. He taught himself music and had a succession of gigs while still at the boy’s high school in Brooklyn. At 16 he briefly played with Duke Ellington’s orchestra. Later he studied theory and composition at the Manhattan School of Music.
