EVENT (Manila, Philippines): J Dilla – Tribute To The Life & Sound [02/10]!

Yesterday afternoon someone responded to my tweet in regards to #DillaDay events in the states. And in my response to the tweet, I decided to go searching for some of these events on my own. During my search I found some tributes that went down last month (trust me, it didnt make any sense to me, either). So when I was searching through facebook, I came upon this (which threw me for a loop; mind-boggled me).

Yes, J Dilla touched the Philippines, y'all. The tribute is happening next week at the M Cafe with DJs Kristian Hernandez, Ms. Badkiss, Heavy Boogie, and Complex... all representing from different parts of the globe. It's dope to know that somewhere outside the US, there's a country that's paying homage to a legend representing us. Two thumbs up.

FEBRUARY 2012: CELEBRATING ‘DILLA DAY’ ACROSS THE STATES!

Today marks the first day of Dilla month. Facebook, twitter, and any popular blog that you may be venturing out to check are also trying to put up their sickest tribute post ever. Even last year, Stones Throw had a video contest, and some of the participants made their own 'Dilla Tribute' to his songs. At this point in time, EVERYONE has either heard about him, or finally know who this famous producer is. Unfortunately, because of his untimely demise is the part of the reason why many (like myself, admittedly) knows of the name. Mind you, my story is slightly different in this case.. but isn't it the same for everyone? The important thing is that everyone came to know his music, and regardless of how anyone feels about that (whether you call it 'jumping on the bandwagon' or whatever), the fact of the matter is that with music, people learn to appreciate it when the artist is still here.. or gone.

Originally broadcast in 2009 on BBC1Extra, this is an hour long mix celebrating hip hop since it's birth with Sugar Hill Gang. And what a journey it takes you on. It's nuts, you gotta listen to it from front to back.

If you are a Guru fan (or a Gangstarr one), then this is definitely for you! The X Label is here to bring you all things Guru, or at least for the most part (I think you guys may have been familiar with the Guru Tributes website around the time when Keith Elam has passed). In this stage, they've released the cassette demo tape of Guru's (going by MC Keithy E back then) earliest recordings (listen above).

Anyhow, this tape (among many other paraphernalia on the site) are for sale. Justin Elam, the main head behind The X Label is honoring Guru's name, keeping it alive and well! Proceeds will go to KC's (Guru's son) trust fund.
