ALBUM REVIEW: IV The Polymath – New Vs. Old

In the past few years, instrumental hip-hop albums have started to garner widespread attention. Previously, MCs used to seek out beat tapes to practice their rhymes or find producers for their albums. Nowadays, producers can release entire projects that don’t sound out of place without a rapper spitting over the tracks. This tradition of showcasing beats without rappers started back in the mid 90s with the help of artists such as DJ Shadow and his album “Endtroducing.” The latest release to come across my desk in this genre is IV the Polymath’s “New Vs Old.”

FREENESS: the Jazzment – After Soul (Holland)
Another great instalment for "The Jazzment" crew, this time they come through with "After Soul"... soulful and straight chilled vibes, as per usual. If you don't know, preview above and get to know. Both Noire and MARWZs are two brothers, that put in work and excel at beatmaking.
The Jazzment is an instrumental piece created by a duo MARWZ + Noire from The Netherlands. Jazzy, spacey sounds experimentally combined with neosoul.

FREENESS: Hey!Zeus – Dopamine Doppelgangerz feat. Radimo (UK)
Hey!Zeus feat. Anthony Drawn - 7 Blues
Hey!Zeus feat. Radimo - Down Here On The Ground
Hey!Zeus feat. Radimo - Ancient Mystics
Our good man Hey!Zeus taking a pause from the forthcoming Obba Supa project here with a bunch of flute riddled instrumentals for the lovers of all things obscure. Joint Sichtexot/Chakra Sounds release.
Spreading from London, unstoppable and unquantized sound layers infiltrate the neocortex of the zeitgeist with pure and unfiltrated wave forms and coerce its cells into an unrestrained dopamine expression.
Coated in firsttakes from Radimo (saxophone and flutes) and Anthony Drawn(saxophone), Obba Supa‘s beat creator Hey!Zeus is starting out in new uneven terrain to combine fusion jazz and hip hop under a unique rain of endorphines.
What was started by creating the instrumental for the song, from which the „Seelenquantisierung“ album (Tufu & Anthony Drawn, January 2011) derived its name, is hereby seized again and will be continued in an even abstruser way with even freer drum constructions in album length.
As being the first Obba Supa free release on Sichtexot, Dopamine Doppelgangerz provides a decisive hint concerning how the further cooperation between Sichtexot and Chakra Sound in the future is likely to be.The Obba Supa album „for.am“ is coming out at the beginning of 2012 on vinyl, brought to you by Sichtexot and Chakra Sounds.

ALBUM: Awon & Kameleon Beats – Concentration Gradient
Sponsored by Word Is Bond, we proudly present the "Concentration Gradient" by Awon & Kameleon
The 17-track album has a noticeably darker feel than their previous release, and our pick for best Free EP of 2010 "Love Supersedes". Yet it maintains their traditional jazzy soulful sound. The subject matter is very political and introspective in nature ranging from current events to spiritual matters. Having worked on the album for some time now the duo feel they have constructed a project that will hit a nerve with its listeners. Tracks like "Had Enough" and "They Coming" focus on the pressures and hardships of modern society while songs like "Heaven" take a more positive and forward-thinking stance.
The vintage hip hop sound is still the underlying force behind their music but this project is much more aggressive musically and lyrically. Awon's delivery is firmer and Kameleon ventures into newer territory sample-wise. The result is an album hip hop heads young and old can feel.
If you into deep lyricism and jazzy soul escapes we highly recommend to give this one a good listen. Gold from top to bottom.
As always pls support the artists and hardship that goes in to their craft.

ALBUM REVIEW: Shinsight Trio – Moonlight Sunrise

Shin-Ski, Insight and DJ Ryow (a.k.a. Smooth Current) are Shinsight Trio. Around 2002, whilst touring the U.S., Insight meets producer Shin who introduces him to Ryow. Compatibility is established and they release the critically acclaimed debut Shallow Nights Blurry Moon in 2006. Combining progressive lyrical content with a heavy jazz and soul inspired production backdrop, many ears were won. However due to its release limited to Japan, it failed to have as influential an impact as it deserved in the west. Nonetheless they sparked a strong cult following, aligning themselves with a lot of the jazzy, melodic sounds being discovered in the alternative hip hop scene in the east.
It however took 4 years for the sophomore Somewhere Beyond The Moon, but all in good stead as it delivered well on high expectations. In the interim, the individual members embarked on solo and side projects; Insight and Damu The Fudgemunk released the highly acclaimed Travel At Your Own Pace as Y Society, Shin-Ski released instrumental and collaborative albums featuring prominent artists such as The Procussions, Othello and Funky DL whilst DJ Ryow built a strong body of work including the strongly praised Scenes From Life.
Moonlight Sunrise therefore follows a very respectful lineage as the ill trio re-unite for their third album.

ALBUM REVIEW: Concept — Impromptu Notes

Even before I first listened to Concept's beautiful Impromptu Notes, I knew I would most probably love it. An album that is described as a "Jazz inspired homage to an art form that paved the way for Hip-Hop" already sounded like something I would greatly appreciate. Blending jazz and hip-hop is obviously nothing new, as the quote itself suggests, but making the importance of the former genre of music and its influence on the latter that obvious and natural is something few producers choose to do. Those lovely notes played by the New Zealand-based producer take us on a journey through time, music and space, as the different tracks explore peaceful, soothing and cosmic landscapes, while the few guests sprinkle the music with inspiring and uplifting gems.
REMIX:De La Soul – De La Soulviet (DJ Tendjiz Soul/Jazz Remix)

De La Soulviet is a mashup album by TenDJiz (Miami-based producer/sound-engineer). It uses acapellas of hip-hop trio De La Soul and couples it with instrumentals created from the Soviet Union soul and jazz samples.
