REVIEW: IV The Polymath

.:ALBUM REVIEW: IV The Polymath - New Vs. Old

In the past few years, instrumental hip-hop albums have started to garner widespread attention. Previously, MCs used to seek out beat tapes to practice their rhymes or find producers for their albums. Nowadays, producers can release entire projects that don’t sound out of place without a rapper spitting over the tracks. This tradition of showcasing beats without rappers started back in the mid 90s with the help of artists such as DJ Shadow and his album “Endtroducing.” The latest release to come across my desk in this genre is IV the Polymath’s “New Vs Old.”

9th Wonder Presents The Wonder Years AUDIO: 9th Wonder Band Practice Part II feat. Phonte & Median9th Wonder - Band Practice Pt. II feat. Phonte & Median

The first single to drop off 9th's forthcoming album The Wonder Years which is scheduled for release September 27th. For me Phonte & Median over the dream merchant's production has always been a winning formula, it feels like the Justus League all over again.

NEWS: 9th Wonder x Phonte: Brotherhood

skitched 20110104 190930 NEWS: 9th Wonder x Phonte: Brotherhood9th Wonder & Phonte

Im pretty sure that you guys have already heard about the rift (via twitter) between these two former friends from last March, caused by the release of  the track 'Star'. Now, according to Phonte, after "...4 years, 2 plates of food and 6 hrs. of convo...", they finally squashed the beef. This is an awesome thing to see in music; rifts among people only hurts those not only those that are involved, but the fans that are admirers of those artists. It's like you can actually feel the '12 degrees of separation' between the two, and it sucks. We've witnessed that with Gangstarr (RIP Guru), Geto Boys, Pete Rock & CL Smooth (who got back together to do the Clean Energy Tour late last year), the now-defunct Roc-A-Fella label, and The Fugees, just to name a few. But to see these grown men get together and put their differences aside and be cool with each other is awesome. It doesnt necessarily have to be anything dealing with music, but more about 'brotherhood', because they were friends before the music. Read below on what Phonte said about the matter.

I appreciate the love for me and @9thwondermusic, but us mending our rift had nothing to do with music and everything to do with manhood. We may collaborate in time, but this is not the start of a LB reunion as neither of us have interest in doing so. Sorry to disappoint. Our friendship began as Phonte Coleman and Patrick Douthit long before a ‘LB’ or ‘9th Wonder’ existed. This was about rebuilding that bond. So in closing, happy new year to all our supporters past and present. Feels great to start the year on a positive note. One love. - via Twitter

NEWS: A3C Hip Hop Festival

skitched 20101016 173149 NEWS: A3C Hip Hop Festival

Last weekend the people of Atlanta, GA were lucky enough to witness the A3C Hip Hop festival. Spanning 3 days and featuring 200 artists all performing in some shape or form across the Masquerade's 15 stages, this was a festival destined to make Rock the Bells look like a shoddy subway/street performance in comparison.

To reel off all the big names that performed would take pixels that your eyes just don't want to see, but with the likes of Artifacts, J-Live, Cunninlinguists, Jean Grae and Murs all performing, how could this not be 3 days to remember? In fact, note particularly how I only reached an artist who's name begins with 'M', that list was so long it was hurting my wrist to scroll any further!

Panel discussions, producer showcases, workshops and live shows were all on offer for Hip Hop fans.

Read more after the jump to see how this one panned out.

Metermaids - Girls and Music

Really felling the production on this one...very unique sound.

From the upcoming album Metermaids Rooftop Shake, produced entirely by 9th Wonder, available this fall.

About:

"Hailing from New York City, Metermaids are Swell and Sentence, two emcees who met through the local underground hip-hop scene in 2006. After releasing their debut EP the same year, the duo toured with the likes of Brand Nubian, Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Fabulous, Lady Bug Mecca (Digable Planets), The Lox, and Camp Lo. After this extensive and impressive tour, the duo released their first full-length effort in 2008 entitled Nightlife, exemplifying their choice to create a new sound in crossover music, blending indie rock with hip-hop. The release was followed up with the EP Nightlife In Illinoise. Never resting, that EP was followed with their "Turn The Lights Out" video which quickly became an internet sensation. The follow-up, the critically acclaimed Smash Smash Bang EP earned the group immense industry support, and the interest of top hip-hop producers including 9th Wonder. The band's music is available for free at the group's official website."
