DROP ON A CLASSIC: (NATIVE TONGUES SERIES) Jungle Brothers

Well its the return of 'Drop On A Classic' after a long hiatus due to many factors but now your fix is back. So continuing on with the Native Tongues series this time around its the 'Jungle Brothers'. A great group with a lot to offer musically but seem to have been over looked compared to other native tongues posse members(in some respects), by critics and the like. Right so lets get down to it with breaking down the group and of coarse the samples section which is going to be fun for all, sit back and get ready to expand ya knowledge even more peoples.
The Jungle Brothers are a hip hop trio who formed in mid 1980's consisting of Michael Small (Mike Gee), Nathaniel Hall (Afrika Baby Bam, a homage to Afrika Bambaataa) and Sammy Burwell (DJ Sammy B). Even from the early days inspiration and musical camaraderie were in no short supply for the group having attended high school with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad as well as Mike Gee's uncle being the heavily influential DJ Red Alert.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Samon Kawamura
Samon Kawamura is a music producer and multi-instrumentalist born in Berlin, raised in Tokyo and now once again residing in Berlin. His debut, Translations (2007) could be considered a turntablist's journey of tutelage, exploring an array of influences and coming out the other side as a product with it's own identity. The follow-up, Unfold (2008) built on this and developed a varied personality attracting the likes of Sa-Ra, Kev Brown, Oh No, Aloe Blacc and Ta'raach.
You could throw rudimentary definitions at Kawamura's sound; jazzy hip-hop, melodic, chill out... but there's a lot of subtlety in the music that reflects a wealth of cultural and musical experiences peppered by candid vocal recordings of a mostly enlightening (but sometimes perplexing) nature.
Speaking of which, his latest project is the ongoing Spur Of The Moment series "whose essence lies in their spontaneity... capturing raw experiences and fleeting moments of inspiration and building beats which embody them". The 25 track THAIMA is the first instalment in the series, "Simply put, Kawamura has taken classics sounds from Bangkok’s street kitchens and infused them with his own Hip Hop flavours. Dinner is served."

I have jammed their music now for so long it always keeps me happy and head noddin. there is a little twist to the samples section of the post this time as I have abused my privileges of being the moderator for our facebooking side of things to select the tracks. I did this simply by asking peeps in via the status. I think its a good look so might make a regular feature. As an added bonus there is a little FREENESS surprise at the end of the post for you Guys to cop. so without further a due lets get it rolling cos the STAKES IS HIGH!
De La Soul are a predominately 3 man hip hop group from Long Island New York, consisting of Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (P.A. DROP ON A CLASSIC: Brand Nubian

Yo whats going on people. well this week you can probably tell I'm following a little bit of a theme here at the moment, last week was KMD so as some of you may know the two groups were label mates as well as collaborators so it seems natural for me to do a post on them. I also have another reason for doing so. I recently had the privilege of watching the new Tribe Called Quest documentary, this brought me onto think about the whole Native Tongues movement of which Brand Nubian were members, as well as many others. So over the coming weeks its going to be an absolute Native Tongues fest here at 'Drop On A Classic' so keep your eyes peeled. Right usual drill on my post game a nice bit of history about the group then a nice meaty stash of sampling information on the group, so sit back relax and prepare for your eyes and ears to get a full dose of information.
DROP ON A CLASSIC: 3rd Bass

So this time its the usual drill 3rd Bass = great group = great music = great samples to be showcased and an interesting history behind the group and its members. So sit back and relax with your favorite beverage and read on to increase your knowledge.

DROP ON A CLASSIC: Gil Scott Heron

Yo 'DOAC' is back in full effect sorry to you all for my long absence technical & personal issues have made my life hard as of late, but I'm back and now its on! As many oF you know recently the sad news that Gil Scott Heron passed away on 27th of last month. So in true homage to this great musician a drop on a classic is definitely way over due. Hopefully this will bring some insight for some of you who don't know what an immense influence he had on music especially Hip Hop, and maybe showcase some new things for those of you already in the know. Lets get to it then homies.
Gilbert "Gil" Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011) was an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his work as a spoken word performer in the 1970s and '80s, and for his collaborative soul works with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul and influenced in part by The Last Poets. Scott-Heron's recording work has received much critical acclaim, especially for one of his most well-known compositions "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised". His poetic style has been influential upon every generation of hip hop since his popularity began. In addition to being widely considered an influence in today's music, Scott-Heron remained active until his death, and in 2010 released his first new album in 16 years, entitled I'm New Here.
ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Akua Naru – The Journey Aflame
Akua Naru ft. Blitz The Ambassador - The Wound
It's about time Word Is Bond got around to showing some love to this release; Conneticut raised, Cologne based Akua Naru's debut album The Journey Aflame, released earlier this year.
Akua weaves her impeccable flow through a tapestry of social and cultural awareness and empowerment, parables of love, and straight party jams with an underlying outlook appreciative to life and understanding of how the past can influence and inform the present.
The positivity is exemplified by the uplifting production that at times becomes truly stirring in evoking the universal themes on the albums deeper tracks. A solid entrance by an artist who has a lot of love and wisdom to spread.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Cloud.
We all have one of those folders on our harddrive... perhaps a couple of gigabytes in size and growing everyday. I'm talking about the .zips, .rars or any other compressed file that becomes the abode for all of the music freeness we come across during our digital digging that we are yet to check out. I don't frequent mine as much as I should, but today I found a real genie in the winrar lamp - Cloud; a Brooklyn beatsmith with dopeness in abundance. Listen, enjoy and support!

DROP ON A CLASSIC: KMD
Yo so this week I'm going with one of my all time favorites, my last few posts have kind of tenuously linked to KMD which has put them at the forefront of my mind for an article for a little while now. I first found out about KMD long time ago after I had first started to listen to MF DOOM. So naturally as my obsession grew I then found the goodness that was the group. My tastes in hip hop generally run with a more old school 80's and 90's vibe so this instantly struck a chord with me, and made me curse myself for not having found it sooner. Well lets get to it. I've had difficulty finding as much detail as I want for the bio really, so the samples section is going to be a bit more in depth. Hope you enjoy!!!
