REVIEW: IV The Polymath

.:ALBUM REVIEW: IV The Polymath - New Vs. Old

In the past few years, instrumental hip-hop albums have started to garner widespread attention. Previously, MCs used to seek out beat tapes to practice their rhymes or find producers for their albums. Nowadays, producers can release entire projects that don’t sound out of place without a rapper spitting over the tracks. This tradition of showcasing beats without rappers started back in the mid 90s with the help of artists such as DJ Shadow and his album “Endtroducing.” The latest release to come across my desk in this genre is IV the Polymath’s “New Vs Old.”

ALBUM REVIEW: Suff Daddy – Gin Diaries

Suff Review Cover Score 1 6 ALBUM REVIEW: Suff Daddy Gin Diaries

The German producer with a penchant for the juniper berry flavoured spirit deals with elements of of jazz throughout, I envisioned myself hearing this music in the background playing in a lush bar/restaurant especially on 'Jimmy Jazz'. '4 My Holiks' could be mistaken as a DJ Premier production (that is a compliment) while 'Worst Case Scenario' is similar to a 9th Wonder beat from the high-pitched soul vocal sample sped-up, but without the effective snares. 'Hospital' with its beautiful piano loop, ECG sample and smart J-Dilla vocal is used in a skillful effect.

skitched 932 6 ALBUM REVIEW: Suff Daddy Gin Diaries Suff Daddy

Smooth soul reminiscent of early to mid 90's soul and rap, while containing elements of that 'old skool' vibe from the breaks, instrumentals and crackles of vinyl with laid back audio you can drift off to another world while appreciating the audio with your headphones on.

Suff Daddy - Konnopke

Sultry vocals, from the features including Miles Bonny, Mariama, Mar, Jim Dunloop and Fleur Earth,-who on 'Oh Bebe' manages to make the German language sound sexy.

Suff Daddy - Oh Bébé ft. Fleur Earth

Suff Daddy has implemented carefully placed loops and samples throughout 'Gin Diaries' to create a sweet blend of songs. Even though it is just over 30 minutes long, it is a very enjoyable experience that begs the listener for more.
