A Tupac Shakur-inspired musical has been confirmed to be in the works today as workshop in New York is underway. Directed by Kenny Leon, who is best known for his work on Fences with Denzel Washington and The Mountaintop with Samuel L. Jackson, Holler If Ya Hear Me is planned to be ready for the ’13-’14 broadway season and is based in an unnamed Midwestern city focusing on the struggles of two childhood friends and their families. Featuring Tupac’s music, the mother of the late rapper, Afeni Shakur, will play a part on the production team.

This news follows the announcement that Tupac will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame posthumously, becoming the fourth rapper to do so, 17 years after his death – read Paddy’s tribute to him here. The musical also comes after Tupac’s appearance as a hologram on stage at Coachella last year.
