9. Kaimbr

Low Budget member Kaimbr has been around for a minute, but he really caught mass attention earlier in the year with The Alexander Green Project, displaying some of the illest lyricism to come out of the area this year.

8. The Doppelgangaz
One of the most hard-working underground duos, they came through with one of the best albums this year, “LoneSharz“. Dope lyrics, dope flows, and both MC’s complement each other real nice on every track. If you haven’t checked out their work yet, you better get acquainted with these brothers, as they are destined to go far.

7. Boog Brown

When it comes to Boog Brown, 2011 has seen the release of “The Brown Study” produced by Apollo Brown, as well as a Remix EP of the project, featuring many renowned acts such as Georgia Anne Muldrow and 14KT… In addition to this, Boog has been mad busy promoting and spreading the word on her work.
One year after the “The Grind Seson Vol.1“, Boog shows that the title was much more than that, as she has been grinding mad hard, which is a good thing since we can’t get enough of this Femcee, one of the best to come out over the last 10 years. We are glad to see that she is doing so well since she signed with Mellow Music. We can’t wait to see what Boog Brown has in store for 2012.

6. Immortal Technique

Undoubtedly one of the most hard-working, hardest-thinking MC’s we have, Immortal Technique released the free LP The Martyr to great acclaim. Balancing lyricism and technicality, the album also came in a politically tumultuous year where there was a lot to be talked about.

5. Willie Evans Jr.

With a Doom-like raspy voice, aggressive flows and witty lyrics, Willie Evans Jr. caught our attention from the get go, but don’t be mistaken, this is DEFINITELY not a Doom copycat. When you sit and listen to a couple of tracks, Willie clearly carves his own lane and it will make you want to listen to much more of what he has to say.
We weren’t the only ones to notice his talent either, as he signed with High Water Music this year and on his last video he had none other than Pharoahe Monch, Jean Grae, Sucio Smash amongst others to cameo. Willie released one of the best and most entertaining albums this year “Introducin’ Willie Evans Jr.”, with a 4 star rating from us. Everyone in the team loves it, and it has been on replay for quite sometime now.

4.Nemo Achida

It’s been a busy year for Nemo, with the release of the mixtape Digital Dan, “Goodbye Brooklyn” EP and more recently, the full EP Nemotional. Nemo cemented his place on our list as one of the most hard-working and original MC’s to do it this year. He excels in quality and lyricism in everything he drops and his beat-picking skills are mad sharp. Also, you can tell that he is only getting better at his craft. This is a brother that you definitely need to keep an eye on.

3. Versis
We first heard of Versis last year when he released “The Journey” produced by Dibiase and got us asking “Who the Hell is Versis??” It seemed that he came out of the blue, with lyrics and a flow that sounded from a much more seasoned MC and we’ve kept an eye on this brother. We can now say we’re glad we did! Since then, he has worked with some of the most prolific producers in the game, including Full Crate, Exile, and Dibia$e. Not a lot of people paid attention to his DOPE album Illcandescent when it was originally released, but this year everyone is talking about this young MC, who is regarded as the next best thing to come out of West Coast underground, and is destined to follow on the footsteps of Blu, Fashawn and Kendrick Lamar. We strongly agree with this view and truly believe that Versis is just starting off and has so much more to offer.

2. Blu

Blu kept a fairly low profile in 2010. 2011, though, has been a completely different ball game with his full album release, NoYork. He also released the “Amnesia” EP” previously and has collaborated with Pete Rock, MED, FLying Lotus, French producer DELA, Freddie Gibbs and Homeboy Sandman to name a few. To round it off (and to everyone’s surprise), he finished this year by releasing the second LP with Exile “Give Me My Flowers Whilst I Can Smell Them“.
Blu has done it all with that usual class, style and coolness he brings to the table. 2011 has been a good year for Blu as he keeps building on that prodigy status he has had since releasing “Below the Heavens“. He also keeps proving he is an MC on the forefront of hip-hop music.

1. Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar. Do we need to say more? He should be in everyone’s list this year.
Dope writing skills, deep thoughts and a very unique delivery, that is what jumps at you when you first listen to a Kendrick track, something that is honest and comes straight from the heart, with a whole lot of bluntness.
After Fashawn had taken 2009 by storm, we were one of the first publications to mention the fact that Kendrick was the follow up act, with his self-titled album “Kendrick Lamar” that many people missed it when it was first released. But Kendrick went back to work and displayed his undeniable talent this year, with “Overlydedicated”. Everyone and their mother had their eyes peeled when the drop happened back in September. The album was received with appraisal by everyone and since its release, it has shot Kendrick to the stratosphere, and we have to say we’re glad to see this MC doing so well.
We truly can’t wait to hear what his next offering will be. We do hope that is something in 2012, so we do not have to wait for much longer.
