Full Spectrum feat Has-Lo (prod Dr. Quandary)

Black Cherry (prod Zilla Rocca)

Another martini before jackhammer season begins. Glorious pulp from your favorite bent nose boy. Good diners, bad women, and black coffee.

Zilla Rocca has a way with words, that’s the least you can say. Creating pictures with those, but also with his music, the “Corrupt Novelist” and “Noir Hop originator” treats us with a wonderful little EP that should become the soundtrack to all your Nights & Weekends. I may be a little late in writing about it, even though I let Zilla Rocca tell us more about the project in a very interesting interview, but I believe in the “better late than never” saying, especially when the music is that good. The MC and producer’s latest project is quickly becoming one of my addictions and I want every music lover out there to get a chance to get hooked as well.

The concept of this EP is quite simple. To quote Zilla Rocca once again, Nights & Weekends is “inspired by late night 1980’s films staples“, and served “with a helping of booze hounds, dive bars, and all the wrong women you chase in your 20’s“. Now that the mood is set, Zilla Rocca and his accomplices can play their role and make you travel through their late teenage years’ memories, which may be yours as well. There is definitely a great feeling of nonchalance and borderline hedonism here, which makes me think of the Lost Generation and the life they must have had in Paris in the 1920s.

Musically, all is made to prevent you from standing still and I dare you not to nod your head to the enticing rhythm of the beats. Zilla Rocca himself, Dr. Quandary, Has-Lo and Small Professor (to name a few) crafted the perfect soundtrack for this trip back in time (in more ways than one). Lyrically, you are travelling thanks to Zilla Rocca and his guests’ vivid and wild imagination, into a cinematic experience which should help you reminisce over those crazy days that occur just before you become an adult. I was really not supposed to write an album review for this one so I’ll leave it at that and strongly encourage you to purchase Nights & Weekends. You won’t be disappointed, trust me.

P.S. That re-work of D’angelo’s Devil’s Pie? Oh, dear…
