I’ma keep going with the production thang I think, see if I can entice more of you in to the forum through it. So after askin for how people flips samples, seeing how you personally flip samples (if you do at all) and favourite beats and producers, it only follows naturally that the question ‘what’s your favourite sample’? is posed and 602Diggler’s beaten me too it. See I love this question, because I love the concept of sampling. Taking something and putting it completely out of context, the art of finding the perfect 5 second loop (whenever I think of sampling there’s a Madlib song which consists of JUST a loop of a small sample, dominated by an eerie flute, I can’t remember what it’s called now actually so if you know what beat I’m on about, tell me!), hopefully one day I’ll get an MPC to play around with! Anyway, Diggler drops this DOPE tune, Hubert Laws’ and Debra Adam’ ‘Family’, it’s real nice, what it’s been sampled in I’m not sure, and if it hasn’t someone needs to. I went for that Al Cooper ‘Nothing’, sampled in the classic classic Binary Star tune ‘Reality Check’. And it’s stuff like this which I love, I wouldnt have known Al Cooper if I didn’t go digging, like you notice on the comments of the beautiful Joanna Newsom song Cosmia on Youtube, that the use of that sample introduced Newsom to a whole new audience (and vice versa). So post your favourite sample, whether it’s because it’s the most eccentric and original or an opening to a new genre.

But then he asks something else, what SHOULD be sampled? This is maybe even more interesting. There’s an infinite amount of music out there but clearly not everything is fit for purpose. Personally, I think Classical is an undertapped resource and I chose Vaughan’s Lark Ascending and Messiaen’s fifth movement of Quartet For The End Of Time as two examples, I like to think someone like Flying Lotus could make mincemeat of that. But it’d be interesting to know what you think can be sampled. How far out of the usual spectrum of Jazz and Soul can sampling go? Is there a 10 second loop that’s staring us in the face but hasn’t been used?
